True Freedom

Amma told this story:

"Once a spiritual master questioned his disciples,

'How do you know when

the night has ended and the day

begun?"

"A disciple replied, 'When you can see

a person at a distance and can tell

if it's a man or a woman.' But

the master shook his head at

the reply.

"Another aspirant said, 'When you can

see a tree standing at a distance and

can tell if it's a mango tree or

an apple tree.'

"But this answer was also incorrect.

The disciples were curious and

requested that he enlighten them by

giving the correct answer. The master

smiled and said, 'When you behold your

brother in every man, and your sister

in every woman, then the night has ended

and the day begun. Until that time,

even when the sun illumines the earth

at the height of noon, it is still night

and you are in the dark.'

"Children, only when you learn to love

everyone equally will true freedom emerge.

Until then, you are bound; you are the

slave of your mind and ego."
