Guest guest
Dear Amarnath, I, too struggle with these very thoughts. It is so hard to comprehend these inequities. Maybe India's hardships and poverty pushes many souls toward transcendence. The ego does not have as many distractions and attachments to hold on to; the "little self" does not have as much power. Perhaps there are more people who are able to act in selfless ways, and this selflessness is reinforced with the powerful examples of India's saints and spiritual traditions. Of course, I am speaking in generalities here. It is just as easy for a soul to become angry and frustrated, and turn towards all manner of selfishness, which is why India has been drawn to become more westernized as a culture. However, there is less mass hypnosis in a society that does not have easy access to big screen T.V.'s, playstations, electronic toys of all kinds, big cars and houses, bombs, forcible aquisition of other countries....greed. Culturalized ego. Americans can be very generous with time and money. However, there is still much more nourishment for the "little self" here in our country, and people tend to gorge on it all as a way of avoiding the Truth. Thus, people can be more selfish and unaware of the suffering around them. Maybe this is why the gulf coast is still shattered and broken. People tend to quickly forget that which is not right in front of them on T.V. There is a mass hypnosis here, and it is reinforced with the cultural standard of materialism that is drilled into us, which says that the more you have, the more you are worth. So, the sense of self worth comes directly from how much we have materially here. In India, when you turn your back on materialism and live the life of a sadhu, you are treated with respect, (however, this is not as common as it used to be, now there is more resistance to that way of living, as the wetern mind is taking hold ). Here, one would be labled as crazy, homeless, worthless. Yet, eventually even this over indulgence and the massive, unfillable hole within the "ego -that -can -never- get -enough" will create enough sickening wounds, pain, isolation and unhappiness that we will begin to turn away from it in search of Truth. How much harm will be done before this happens? Oh Amma, May the Great Awakening happen quickly here, and may the wounds inflicted by the ego heal into the Wisdom of Truth and Dharma. Allowing ourselves to be woken up and healed is the first step. That is why Amma is here. What is impossible when She is with us? Amarnath, Thank you for sharing such noble thoughts, and for sharing your own inner beauty. Noble thinking is always a stepping stone to greater things, when one is blessed to have Amma for a Mother! Your thoughts provide inspiration for all of us. Much Love, Sanatani amarnath <anatol_zinc wrote: Feeding the Poor ~ On the Indian Tours Amma feeds thousand of Indians for free. Crowds of tens of thousands are common and some even 100,000. See the pictures @ www.amritapuri.org . How is it possible in India, a poor nation relative to the USA? Well for one thing, besides the donated or bought food, there are hundreds( and perhaps thousands ) of sevaks to prepare and distribute the food, to organize lines of thousands of people, to be patient, tolerant, loving in stifling heat, lack of water perhaps, etc. Some Indians consider such opportunities to serve others a real blessing and are more than willing to serve others even if it means missing seeing Amma. Then when we consider good old USA, one of the wealthiest nations in the world, why is there poverty and hunger at all? Why is there lack of education ? Why is it that obesity is on the rise and health deteriorating costing over one trillion annually? At least the last q may have a simple answer ~ maybe ~ too many calories and not enough nutrition? In India, even the calories are missing. "My people perish for lack of knowledge." Why is it in good old USA, each of Amma's kitchens can feed only 50 or so once per month? I am not blaming anyone. If any one is to blame it is me ~ my ego/mind which has created this world that I see. On the one hand USA is still a refuge for many immigrants, has helped many nations in the past; on the other hand why the need to bomb others out of existence? Why big oil, big cars, heartless/godless entertainment ? I am just asking questions. The sayings ~ What is is GOD ~ There will always be poor ~ etc ~ were/are affirmations which I still need to understand. I can do little but write these words and post them, email to my list of 30 friends. Tell them of Amma's love and Temba's innocent desire. "Imagine all the people living in harmony" ~ beatles http://www.puresilence.org/beatles_and_spirituality.htm Imagine all poor people eating in Amma's soup kitchens every day not only calories but real live nutrition while listening to Amma's bhajans. Imagine all poor people growing in health and happiness. Not becoming like everyone else selfish and fat with possessions as the only happiness. Real Happiness! Amma's Happiness! Unselfish Happiness ! Sharing ! Helping each other ! Sacrificing the little self ! Surrendering to Freedom ! In Amma's Love ! Om Amma, amarnath PS ~ if your ego/mind is offended by my ego/mind, remember : the bad news ~ our egos still get offended, perhaps angry, etc the good news ~ we are not he egos !
