Guest guest
Matruvani is a monthly magazine published at Amritapuri; life- subscription used to be $150. Excerpt from Matruvani( March 2006 ) "unforgettable Memories" by Swami Purnamritananda Puri The world is sustained by the enchanting power of love. Where there is love, there is no distance. If there is love even language becomes superfluous. Silence is the language of the atma( Self ). The Ganges of love cascades from the plane of the atma( Self ). Words are powerless to define what silence can impart. In the olden days, the Guru and disciples communed in silence. They had attained a state wherein they could understand everything without speaking. This is possible at the pinnacle of love. The mother knows what her hungry child needs even before its face becomes wan. I had been unable to grasp from words or books the wisdom Amma transmitted through this silence during the early days, after I reached Amma's presence. If we are watchful, we will realize how great are the changes that occur in our mind because of changes in Amma's facial expressions. Her single glance has more power than a thousand words. What is it that cannot be taught? That is what the Guru teaches! Amma was teaching even in Her days of absorption in silent meditation. She is trying to unite human hearts through supreme love. The Guru's shower of grace falls on the disciple who has an attitude of love and surrender. …… Every single thought in our mind is capable of influencing nature strongly. Therefore, it is an offence to pollute nature with evil thoughts. ……… Amma cautions us to handle the instrument that is the mind very carefully. The way people handle the mind is similar to the state of a child who has been handed a burning torch. Using the mind without understanding its secrets can cause total destruction. This is why the Guru gives us a mantra, so that we can tame the mind. Chanting the mantra is the way to cleanse the flow of thoughts. It's not easy to do away with thoughts altogether. But we can use good thoughts to weaken and gradually stop other thoughts totally. As Amma says, if we continue pouring fresh water into a pot of salt water, its salinity will gradually decrease. So, fill your minds with noble thoughts. You will then be able to attain inner purity very quickly.
