Guest guest
Dearest GeorgeSon, Thank you SO much for taking the time to post these quotes from Amma. It warms my heart to know that she does feel this way about intoxicants… and that I’ve also been abiding by her wishes. I used to take quite a bit of speed when I was in high school, and was also drinking heavily at that time and the year afterwards. Looking back… I wonder how I ever even survived. My big turn-around point was getting pregnant at 19 and realizing life is no longer about ME… but about my baby and US. I would occasionally have a drink here and there (maybe 3-4 times a year) for a while. But then I realized one day that the only reason I was drinking was to feel differently... and to escape. I didn’t crave the taste of it or really enjoy the flavor. I wanted a change. One day I just told myself that drinking was changing me, and I did not need something to make me become someone that I normally wasn’t. I didn’t need to have something to calm me down or relax me… I could simply lie down, take a hot bath, or pray. Guest guest
OM NAMAH SIVAYA thanks for these quotes of Amma's words. to me the crux of Amma's words here is not whether it is "right" or "wrong" but that intoxicants deplete us of energy. either through addiction, avoidance (of responsibilities or problems that need to be dealt with), or the fact that they are physically detrimental. i have always loved to get "high" and for me too much was never enough. exemplified by taking four hits of acid at once (a very long and intense trip). and i have had what "spiritual experiences" with drugs. but the point is with intoxicants it comes at a price. and i now know i can get "higher" through spiritual practices than by other ways. spiritual practice is energy additive not energy depleting. real not artificial. permanent not temporary. someone quoted Neem Karoli Baba, saying that he said to "smoke only to be with Siva." which he did say but he also said, "Smoking hashish is not necessary. It does you no good. It only lasts for a little while and it isn't good for the heart. LSD allows you to come into the room and pranam to Christ, but after two hours you must leave. LSD is not the true samadhi. The best medicine is to Love Christ. Devotion is an addiction that lasts all the time." Guest guest
Where did Amma refer to coffee or chai as an intoxicant? She might have said a sadhak would be better or not consuming these things, but I have never heard Her say that it was an intoxicant, which it certainly is not. It is a central nervous system stimulant for sure...especially the at Starbuck's potency! - Aikya Param Ammachi Tuesday, January 10, 2006 1:34 PM Re: Amma on "Intoxicants" And Amma considers coffee an intoxicant. Guest guest
OM NAMAH SIVAYA to me, the point is not about categorizing everything. Amma says that to pray without purity is like pouring milk into a dirty vessel. this to me means on a physical level, that putting any unecessary things in our body hinders the the flow of Divine Energy. we all do put unecessary things in are body (or i should speak for myself and say i know i do) but the more i fall in Love with The Divine the less i am willing to compromise. i think the extras come at the expense of Amma's Divine Love flowing within me. Guest guest
Namah Shivaya I think you are so right. I think Mother has changed us in ways we don't even know. She has always said that this change is gradual. But I talk to old friends about the things they are doing and what they're into and I feel like we aren't even the same breed of creature sometimes! To think that going to a crowded room of 1,200 or so people, watching someone hug people is the highlight of our existence. Who's weird here?. :-) I was doing some Seva in the snack shop in San Ramon in the mid morning after people had their first glimpse of Mother. The smiling loving faces.- it was God smiling at God. What a gift! We are so lucky! Jai Ma! Prasadini ecjensen_us wrote: > OM NAMAH SIVAYA > > to me, the point is not about categorizing everything. Guest guest
Wow. I guess I missed that. I would really appreciate it if you could point that out. - Aikya Param Ammachi Tuesday, January 10, 2006 3:30 PM Re: Amma on "Intoxicants" One reference by Amma to coffee as an intoxicant is in Eternal Wisdom. I'm guessing that it's in Vol. 1.It's elsewhere as well. Aikya Ammachi, "Mahamuni" <mahamuni@c...> wrote: > > Where did Amma refer to coffee or chai as an intoxicant? Guest guest
Coffee really is considered a gateway drug. I've switched from coffee to yerbe mate, which seems much milder. Guest guest
Gateway drug...I don't know. Mate certainly is milder, as is black tea, oolong tea and green tea in descending order. It all has to do with how much caffeine is in each, as well as each has somewhat of a different effect on the CNS. I feel each herb with caffeine or another "eine" in the same family, such as with Mate, to feel a little different. There is always the optimum way, if one's lifestyle can accommodate, and then there is doing the best you can do at any one time. IMHO, I think the main factor is addiction. If you can't survive without it, I think something is wrong, again IMHO. Some people "can't wake up without their coffee" or other caffeine fix. This presents a problem. Though when I do the US Tour, I would find it hard to keep the hours I keep without at least some Mate or Chai now and then. But I'm an old man now. Guest guest
Dear Sweta, Although I’ve not tried yerba mate, I know that it also has the similar effect that coffee does. I’ve heard many people steer clear of it, also feeling that it is a “drug”. (Ugh, drug seems so strong of a word, since we are used to associating the word with hardcore intoxicants.) It’s so hard to draw the line on “intoxicants”, in my opinion. Well, not necessarily hard to do (you could easily say you are not going to partake of anything that will alter yourself), but so many of us are accepting of these various substances, to a degree. You could eliminate coffee, alcohol, cigs, and any illegal drugs. But what about prescription meds? Chocolate? Both of them are altering substances. It’s a hard topic, no doubt. Many of us feel that coffee and caffeine are acceptable… but we draw the line there. Many people will rationalize that marijuana is natural… tobacco is natural, and so on. I guess until/unless Amma comes out with a specific statement regarding the use of “intoxicants”, we will all continue to abide by what we think is acceptable. ¸..• ´¨¨)) -:¦:- ¸.•´ .•´¨¨)) ((¸¸.•´ ..•´ -:¦:- ..::Brightest Blessings::.. -:¦:- ((¸¸.•´.¸..•` ..::Bela::.. Guest guest
Dear Bela, Namah Shivaya, Since I've been very addicted to coffee for most of my life, switching to Yerbe Mate feels like a step in the right direction. It's similar to how I felt after switching to Chai. Some day, I want to be free of all attachments, but most of the changes seem to be happening gradually. A shaman told me that for me, Yerbe Mate would be a better choice. I should research it. Guest guest
Dear Sweta, It’s a good thing you’ve switched from coffee to yerba mate – congratulations! I don’t know terribly much about mate, only what I’ve seen here and there. But I’ve heard from all sources that it is milder than the effects of the caffeine in coffee. I drink a cup or two of coffee a day. I don’t feel like I need it, but I like the warmth of it, the taste of it, and the little boost I get from it. I could do fine without it… but I like it, LOL. I’ve struggled with severe anemia for quite some time now, and that little boost sometimes does wonders when I am at work and need to be a bit more alert. One day, I, too, would like to be free from attachments… I’m baby stepping it and making wee changes here and there. We take our bodies and our minds for granted. I think we truly appreciate them when we finally get to a spot where we nurture them with the utmost of care, and realize what a beautiful gift they are. I pray I can make it there and be able to stand back a moment and marvel at my temple! Guest guest
I know that there has been a lot of discussion about "addictions"-which can take many forms. For myself, I unfortunately love food so mine is quite visible! LOL...If it's an addiction or not, I'm not sure but I guess it could be. I was previously addicted to exercise as well. That one surely felt better! I've also done drugs when I was young (much much younger and it seems so long ago...)When I took up meditation, I lost interest in using them. In TM I recalled being taught how nature abhors a vacuum (doesn't like). So once we get rid of an addiction-whether it be drugs, alcohol or food-that we must find another activity to fill the vacuum. So I hope that idea may be helpful in some way.
