Guest guest
The prayer partner idea works for all the reasons you mention, linda. I don't know if it could work by email but that's because I haven't tried it yet. Telephone works very well. Each person defines their own spiritual focus and comes up with three questions for the prayer partner to ask them so that they report on what they are doing/what's happening related to that focus. Each person decides when to change to another focus. The other part of it is that the partners don't give advice or decide what the other person's focus means. Similarly, the individual doesn't need to be anxious to explain or defend their focus. My prayer partner at one point used a term which confused me and I left it alone because it meant something precious to her. I didn't need to understand it; she did. It was HER focus. Other than that you need to decide on how often you are going to check in with each other and how long the check-ins should be. It's important that this feel like support and we're all very busy. My room mate, from whom I got this idea, used to check in with her prayer partner daily. Now it is much less often. Once a week would seem to be a minimum. They say that only 10% of our minds work on the conscious level. The other 90% is busy all right but it's on an unconscious or subconscious level.Usually it's just replaying things we've been told. The prayer partner dynamic helps to engage the other 90% of the mind, turn off the automatic playback and direct it in the way you choose. I say that because even when it didn't seem that I did anything to further whatever I was working on, it still progressed and, when I was asked my questions, I was surprised to see that there was something to report. That experience led to a feeling of gratitude. If anybody wanted to try this, I guess they would have to post an email and then others could contact them in return.
