Dear Pahari Maa ~ it sounds like you got what you prayed for. If your

daughter is highly ethical and compassionate, she is spiritual. Many children

never

learn those lessons, and those are the most basic you can get, regardless of

what the path is. Perhaps her path will turn out to be different (maybe

she'll turn to Wicca, or NA spirituality, or Western Mysticism, or who knows).

And it could just be normal, old fashioned rebellion (of course, I don't know

how old she is now). I prayed the same way, and then I let the ball drop.

There was nothing structured spiritually for her, though I was wending my way

through a spiral dance of spirituality.

 

Amy went to see Amma with me a couple of times and with my sister, and we

all got darshan together, and it was very special to me. But Amy has chosen

Karunamayi and has her own unique way of doing puja, which is very simple but

beautiful. She does not practice regularly ... but then, neither do I. What

matters to me is that she is, as your daughter, compassionate, loving,

sensitive. And she has her rebellious streak, but she's mostly outgrown that

now. We

Namah Shivaya,

Some of the best people I have known in this life have been

self-proclaimed heathens. These people all were

very honest, compassionate, caring, sensitive, giving, and had great

integrity. Someone said they were spiritual,

just not in this lifetime. We could all only aspire to have all of

those good qualities. I don't know if spirituality and

"goodness" are necessarily connected.

Shree Maa said one time "don't think that spirituality is anything

different from doing for others as you would have them do for you."

On that basis, my daughter is very spiritual in most of her dealings.

It is only with her mother that this rebellious streak comes out and

some kind of deep fear of gurus.

 

She is 36 yrs old and a double Aries, very strong-willed and stubborn.

The jyotishi that did my chart recently saw that very clearly. He said

that we didn't have the ideal mother/daughter relationship but that we

would always support each other when needed.

That statement is very profound; looking at myself (and assuming I

get defined to be "spiritually inclined"), I would not necessarily

define the two together.

 

These qualities may be connected, and to a large majority they are,

but not to all.

 

However I do believe that in the fairly advanced reaches of the

spiritual journey, these qualties are inevitably, and intricately,

connected. In the beginning and the interim though, all kinds of

nonsense get associated with a person who is spiritual.

 

I know my words probably do make the point very clearly, hence I

refer you to Nisargadatta Maharaj's analogy in Nealu Swami's book -

the analogy of the donut.

 

When you dip the dough into the oil, the donut fries in the hot oil

and makes a huge spattering noise. Later when it has absorbed enough

oil and heat and has "cooked", the noise dies away and what is left

is a sweet edible donut.

 

similarly, initial stages of spirituality creates a tremendous

upheavel in the old paradigms and purifies us in that process (noise

of frying). Later, after purification, what is left is the sweetness

and goodness of love that others can partake of.
