Guest guest
Hi, I thought I'd share this note from a friend who has lived at Amritapuri for many years: Dear J. Well, I moved. I’m now an "Ettimadai person". I asked Amma if I could come out here as soon as she returned from Europe and she said yes, so here I am. It’s about a 10 hour train ride from Amritapuri, in Tamil Nadu, inland, near the city of Coimbatore. And I’m finding it to be a peaceful haven after the rajasic bustle of Amritapuri. I’m in one of about 10 huts nestled in a grove of coconut trees located out behind the Amrita Institutions campus. The hut is quite cute from the outside. Its one single room, 12’ x14’, with electricity, fan, and attached toilet and shower (well, bucket bath). It is by no means posh, but it will definitely do, especially after I fix it up at bit. The food is good too. I take a 10 minute walk down to the kitchen and load up my Tupperware dishes and come back up here and eat. Also there are papaya trees everywhere and the papayas as delicious and free for the picking. It gets quite chilly at night and I sleep under two blankets. This is a big change from Amritapuri where any covering is unnecessary. The water is cold too. I just bought a large electric heating coil to warm my bath water, and it works quite well. It takes about five minutes to heat a full bucket of water. The mosquitoes are a problem. They are bigger and more aggressive than their Amritapuri cousins and I’ve been screening my windows with netting. I have slowed them down a bit but some still get through. I haven’t seen any ants indoors yet though. That is a very good sign. The property is located right at the base of the Western Ghat Mountains and wild elephants are reputed to frequent the surrounding hills. There is even a high, well-tended electric fence all around the campus to keep them out. This fence made me feel quite secure until someone pointed out to me that the hut I live in is on the outside of the fence! But that’s okay. It will take more than a couple wild elephants to scare me (yeah, right). But I do like the wilderness feel of the place. Yesterday while on a hike I flushed out a pair of wild peacocks. However the place needs a good bit of fixing up as far as I’m concerned. Perhaps because I’m a Virgo I’m a little finicky and want a clean comfortable hut. As far as I’m concerned it needs a new interior paint job, some shelves, and I would love to lay some tile or linoleum on top of the cement floor. This shouldn’t cost a whole lot as the room is so small. One good thing is that my cellular internet connection works fine out here. So anyway, here I am. The purpose of my moving is to have solitude and a quiet place to meditate and it certainly does seem to be that. The underlying spiritual vibe of the place is quite strong and I’ve had several decent meditations so far. I can’t wait to get all settled in so that I can focus solely on my sadhana. I’ve wanted to do something like this for years and it looks like now, by Amma’s grace, I finally have my chance. I intend to be out here for a while but then what do I know? My Amritapuri roommate has come out here twice now, with the intention of staying permanently both times, but after about three months he gives up and heads back to the Ashram. He says he can’t stand his own mind when he’s out here in the silence. So it’s best for me not to make any declarations. I’m here today, and I’m glad I am. I will attach a photo of the hut. Well that’s all for now, I hope this finds you well. In Amma's love,
