Nagapattinam was the worst affected by the tsunami in the country: 6,065 people died in the district, 3,378 in the town alone. But the survivors have doggedly rebuilt their shattered lives. The best indication is the way people of Samanthanpettai and neighbouring villages turned out to see 375 families move into a self-contained and fully integrated township spread across 11 acres, built as part of the Rs 100-crore package pledged by Mata Amritanandamayi Mutt and designed by engineers of IIT Madras. The sprawling ground overflowed with about 10,000 people. The whole area sported a festive look with streets decorated with streamers, houses adorned with flowers and mango leaves and doors smeared with vermilion and kumkum. The well-attired villagers, especially the women who were out in their shining new sarees, gave one the impression that tsunami relief had indeed reached a good number of people. The district administration, led by collector J Radhakrishnan who won accolades for his dynamic leadership, has planned a slew of events to commemorate the anniversary. Currently, an exhibition of photos, covering all aspects of disaster relief is on at the collectorate. The then-and-now photos show the extent of damage and the reconstruction. On the anniversary (Monday), a memorial park at the collectorate, which depicts a clock, a boat and an Ashoka Pillar which were recovered from the areas ravaged by the tsunami, will be opened. ------ ©Bennett, Coleman and Co., Ltd.
