Dear Temba ~ I am so glad you shared this story with us, as well as your feelings about programs and techniques that are free vs those that charge. Having been part of the "New Age" community, this issue of charging money was always in the front of my mind. For several years, I used to give workshops ~ on the Tarot, on shamanism, on connecting with the creative self. People were so hungry for this connection. I looked at what other people were charging, and I asked myself the same question you did, and answered it immediately. I just could not justify in my heart, charging high prices for what I was teaching, and there were many times when I did ceremonial work and connecting with the creative self work as a part of a community festival where I did not charge at all. What I came up with was that I would keep the prices of my workshops low so that people who didn't have lot of money would be able to afford them. I was charging $25 or $30 for a 4 hour workshop; something others would have charged $100 or more for. But to me, sharing the information, empowering people to learn ways to connect with their own creative and divine self was more important to me than the money. I have always had immense respect for Amma that She has free programs. I think one way you can tell a true guru is whether the opportunities to spend time with them are free or cost money. I also highly respected that, even for the retreats, where money did have to be charged to cover the cost of lodging and food, the prices were so reasonable. Your story of teaching the children to chant OM was precious, and I'm sure that each of those children still carries that within his or her heart. I don't think the "argument" in the New Age community over whether people should charge for sharing their knowledge will ever be settled. But I absolutely stay away from anything where I feel the price is gouging people and making the workshop or the healing or whatever too high for the average person.
