Dear ec ~ Oh, what you wrote here is so true, whether you are singing a bhajan or other type of song. When my singing has "felt" the best is when I have dropped all my ego concerns (is my voice sounding good? Does the audience like my music? Why is that person swaying the turn and that one is looking asleep?, etc.) One other thing I wanted to share, re the issue of people asserting they are gurus, Krishna Das only calls himself a "kirtan walla" (one who sings the names of God).
