Too true that there are others with similar problems. I had spinal surgery

when I was two days old (I was born with spina bifida) and am constantly

plagued by back aches and nerve problems, though I can walk and am completely

"normal" as far as anyone else knows. Medical miracle, they call it...anyhoo,

I'd

be greatly interested to know of a reply to this as well.

Om Namah Shivayah,

Hoping someone can help me out with some advice :)

I was in a car accident not too long ago and have mind numbing back pain after

sitting for

more than 15 minutes. At the last retreat, I was in agony and when I came back

my

physical therapist wanted to know what the heck I was doing to cause so much

muscle

spasm! While at the retreat, I was shifting my weight and squirming all over the

place just

trying to alleviate the pain. It was so frustrating because I could not fully

enjoy the

moment, and I was embarassed being the only one fidgeting all over the place.

So my question is.... what is the best option for a floor pillow/backjack thingy

that works

well for pain but is also non-obtrusive or bulky? I don't want to take up any

more space

than my body normally would, but I also don't want to suffer in pain while

trying to enjoy

Amma's presence.

I am asking because I saw all manner of floor chairs and pillows at the last

retreat. I looked

on Ebay and could only find things that looked way too large. The meditation

pillows were

all very big and the backjacks seem rather big too if I am not mistaken....not

to mention

being rather expensive.

Any advice on my best bet for taking care of my back and not taking up too much

space is

greatly appreciated! I'm sure there are others on the board with similar

problems!

Namaste,

Ananthasree

A number of people do have backjacks, and while they can help prop you up, I

don't

actually think they provide very good support/alignment. I'm not sure what your

back

issue is, but I've heard these are really good:

I think the size of the cushion/chair isn't so much of an issue unless it's very

tall and

blocks others' view (although you could put it toward the back of the

floor-seating area.

Also, there is no requirement to sit on the floor! Amma doesn't want anyone to

suffer and

if you're too uncomfortable, please go and sit in one of the chairs....even if

just to rest.

I hope to meet you in Michigan!

Blessings,

Iswari

Namah Shivaya Ananthasree,

I have a weird lower back problem due to late stage Lyme, and I have

used all manner of

seats while visiting Mother. I would figure out what your back needs in

terms of a seat and try to whittle it down in size. For me a wedge

shape is best, and I carry a small wedge shaped pillow wherever I go. It

looks weird, but it works. I bought a backjack about 10 years ago, and

my husband and I have used it a lot, so it was worth the money. You may

be able to find a cheap used one on eBay. I had to take the cushion out

of my backjack, since the slant of the backjack seat is in the wrong

direction. There is a foam shop in the next town that will cut foam

however you want it and I have had them make a few different

"seats" for me over the years.

Also, just remembered, I got a Zen bench seat from the Shasta Abbey.

Their store is now closed, but maybe there are other such stores on line

or somewhere near you where you can buy one of many seats.

Hope this helps.
