....If you are talking about a mala that was Mother's that you paid

megabucks for, I would definitely have it fixed. I have one that

I've had for a couple of years and I wear it a lot. I am thinking that I

should restring it, as elastic tends to wear out...

Dear Prasadini, Anansathree and All: ~ I didn't know that malas were strung

on plastic. Hmmm ... most of the ones I've seen (the less expensive ones) are

knotted in between the beads. The more expensive, like the rudraksha or

crystal malas, are often put together with beading wire, which also allows

space

between the beads. I discovered the hard way that the space between the beads

is very important when using the mala. Probably the strongest thing to string

a mala on would be beading wire, .14, if that fits the holes in the beads.

The problem would then be the space between, but one could put smaller beads

like medium to large sized seed beads or 2mm beads of some other sort that the

person would like with the mala (garnet would be pretty). This strength of

beading wire is very hard to break. The other difficulty is that, somewhere,

towards the middle of the back of the mala, if you were wearing it, there

would have to be one or more crimp "beads," to tuck the two ends of the beading

wire into (and preferably also through several other beads). The crimp beads

could then be hidden inside one of the mala beads. If anyone wants more

information on this, please feel free to write me off digest. Jai Ma ~ Linda
