Another report from the Katrina front...

Here's a note from a friend, who is ex-Mormon herself, but still has family

who are very active in that faith...

I learned from my Jeffrey's usual sunday evening phone call- why he hadn't

called me the Sunday before. Seems he was with a group of men who volunteered

to go to help the victims of Katrina from the LDS churches in SC....part of the

group dubbed by the press as The Stormin' Mormons. He says you cannot even

comprehend the devistation unless you witness it with your own eyes- if the

house the people called home wasn't a pile of lumber- the contents after three

days of sitting in four feet of water were ruined beyond saving- the owners

dazed and not knowing where to begin to help themselves. Jeffrey took his l6 yr

old son- Danny- a somewhat rebelious and ungrateful child- and that was a good

thing. American teenagers haven't a clue concerning hardships of almost any

kind- and it was an eyeopener. He dug right in and worked right along side his

dad for l5 hours straight. Women with tears streaming down their faces insisted

on hugging the men no matter how muddy and dirty they had

become- so happy they were for their help. The LDS church may be sending more

men next weekend. It took l0 hours to drive down there- and l0 hours back- but

being able "do something" to help gave them"health in their navels and marrow in

their bones" for such a tremendous physical exertion and Jeff and Danny - like

every volunteer - will be more than glad to do it all again.

Thank you for sharing this, Jyotsna. It especially moved me to read about the

man's young son, who saw the devastation and immediately pitched in to help,

along side his father. Sometimes it takes hardships to really open our eyes to

the struggle of others...
