Dear Ones,

Can you help me gather inspiring quotations--especially Christian

ones--for letter writers to Hurrican Katrina survivors and

evacuees? I've got the letter writing Guidelines together and there

is some hope that I'll have at least one address and person to

distribute letters by next week.

I know some of you love this kind of task. If I could clone myself

today and thus have two of me to work on the various tasks today,one

of me would be looking at a Bible Concordance. Anybody out there

have one of those? I'd look up words like

storm

wind

water

food

life

love

flood

home

refuge

courage

strength

companion

protection

protector

I'd read the quotations in the Bible and pick out ones that made me

feel a ray of light, or an infusion of faith and strength. Those

would go on the list with the Biblical reference.

Can some of you do that for me? Most of our letter recipients will

be Christian so it would be great to suppport them with words from

the Bible.

There is also a concordance to the upnishads and the Bhagavad Gita

if anyone besides me has that, go for it.

Feel free to share your discoveries here. Everybody needs

upliftment.

Thanks and blessings!

Dear Aikya:

Here are some quotations found at a wwbsite called Online Parallel

Bible:

"We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not

driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not

destroyed..."

2Corinthians 4:8,9

Troubles are round us on every side, but we are not shut in; things

are hard for us, but we see a way out of them;

2 Corinthians 4:8

(this translation adapted from a book called the "Bible in Basic

English")

"For God, who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," has shone in

our hearts..."

2Corinthians 4:6

Come to me, all you who are weary and heavy laden, and I will give

you rest."

Matthew 11:28

"...learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will

find rest for your souls."

Matthew 11:29

"The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are

crushed in spirit."

Psalms 34:18,19

"I am the light of the world. He who follows me, will not walk in

darkness, but will have the light of life."

John 8:12

"Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and

opens the door, I will come into him."

Revelation 3:20

"You, who have sent great and bitter troubles on me, will give me

life again, lifting me up from the deep waters of the underworld."

Psalm 71:20

He makes the storm into a calm, so that the waves are at peace.

Psalm 107:29

You will make me greater than before, and give me comfort on every

side.

Psalm 71:21

Among all my troubled thoughts, your comforts are the delight of my

soul.

Psalm 94:19

how 'bout JUDEO-Christian :)

>From Isaiah, chapter 42 (this was part of my Bar

Mitzvah Haftarah portion)

"The spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the

Lord hath anointed me to bring good tidings unto the

humble; He hath sent me to bind up the broken-hearted,

to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening

of the eyes to them that are bound...and they shall

build the old wastes, they shall raise up the former

desolations, and they shall renew the waste cities,

the desolations of many generations."

More than 30 years (oy vey!!) after my Bar Mitzvah, I

can still remember my Haftarah and Torah (Leviticus,

ch. 2) portions...can even remember parts of them in

Hebrew, and the blessings before and after the

readings to boot!

Today was a national day of prayer Stateside, but just

like the Katrina relief efforts it came days too late

and many observances were poorly attended (in

Columbus, OH they held a prayer meeting at the State

House and no one came!!)

Dear Aikya,

Here's a poem:

My life is but a weaving, between my God and me,

I do not choose the colors, He worketh steadily.

Oftimes he weaveth sorrow, and I in foolish pride,

Forget he sees the upper, and I the underside.

Not til the loom is silent, and the shuttles cease to fly,

Will God unroll the canvas and explain the reason why.

The dark threads are as needful in the skillful Weaver's hand,

As the threads of gold and silver in the pattern he has planned.

Author

unknown

While there are many, many scriptures, there are also many of the grand

old Christian hymns, which are really tightly structured poems set to music,

that have wonderful sentiments therein. One of my favorite songwriters is

Fanny J. Crosby, whose hymns express encouragement and compassion.

Here are some examples:

I.

Down in the human heart, crushed by the temptor

Feelings lie buried that grace can restore;

Touched by a loving heart, wakened by kindness,

Chords that are broken will vibrate once more.

2.

Thou my everlasting portion,

More than friend or life to me;

All along my pilgrim journey,

Savior, let me walk with Thee.

Not for ease or worldly pleasure,

Nor for fame my prayer shall be;

Gladly will I toil and suffer,

Only let me walk with Thee.

3.

All the way my Savior leads me; What have I to ask beside?

Can I doubt his tender mercy Who through life has been my guide?

Heav'nly peace, divinest comfort, Here by faith in him to dwell!

For I know whate'er befall me, Jesus doeth all things well.

All the way my Savior leads me; Cheers each winding path I tread,

Gives me grace for every trial, Feeds me with the living bread.

Though my weary steps may falter, And my soul athirst may be,

Gushing from the Rock before me, Lo! a spring of joy I see!

All the way my Savior leads me; Oh, the fullness of his love!

Perfect rest to me is promised In my father's house above.

When my spirit, clothed immortal, Wings it's flight to realms of day,

This my song through endless ages: Jesus led me all the way!

4. What a Friend We Have in Jesus (by Joseph Scriven)

What a friend we have in Jesus, All our sins and griefs to bear;

What a privilege to carry Everything to God in prayer!

Oh what peace we often forfeit, oh what needless pain we bear

All because we do not carry everything to God in prayer.

Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere?

We should never be discouraged; Take it to the Lord in prayer.

Can we find a friend so faithful Who will all our sorrows share?

Jesus knows our every weakness; Take it to the Lord in prayer.

Are we weak and heavy laden, cumbered with a load of care?

Precious Savior, still our refuge, Take it to the Lord in prayer.

Do thy friends despise, forsake you? Take it to the Lord in prayer!

In His arms He'll take and shield thee; Thou wilt find a solace there.

5. God Leads His Dear Children Along

In shady, green pastures, so rich and so sweet,

God leads His dear children along;

Where the water’s cool flow bathes the weary one’s feet,

God leads His dear children along.

Refrain

Some through the waters, some through the flood,

Some through the fire, but all through the blood;

Some through great sorrow, but God gives a song,

In the night season and all the day long.

Sometimes on the mount where the sun shines so bright,

God leads His dear children along;

Sometimes in the valley, in darkest of night,

God leads His dear children along.

Refrain

Some through the waters, some through the flood,

Some through the fire, but all through the blood;

Some through great sorrow, but God gives a song,

In the night season and all the day long.

Though sorrows befall us and evils oppose,

God leads His dear children along;

Through grace we can conquer, defeat all our foes,

God leads His dear children along.

Refrain

Some through the waters, some through the flood,

Some through the fire, but all through the blood;

Some through great sorrow, but God gives a song,

In the night season and all the day long.

Away from the mire, and away from the clay,

God leads His dear children along;

Away up in glory, eternity’s day,

God leads His dear children along.

Refrain

Some through the waters, some through the flood,

Some through the fire, but all through the blood;

Some through great sorrow, but God gives a song,

In the night season and all the day long.

6. Jesus Calls Us

Jesus calls us over the tumult

Of our life’s wild, restless, sea;

Day by day His sweet voice soundeth,

Saying, “Christian, follow Me!”

As of old Saint Andrew heard it

By the Galilean lake,

Turned from home and toil and kindred,

Leaving all for Jesus’ sake.

Jesus calls us from the worship

Of the vain world’s golden store,

>From each idol that would keep us,

Saying, “Christian, love Me more!”

In our joys and in our sorrows,

Days of toil and hours of ease,

Still He calls, in cares and pleasures,

“Christian, love Me more than these!”

Jesus calls us! By Thy mercies,

Savior may we hear Thy call,

Give our hearts to Thine obedience,

Serve and love Thee best of all.

7. Jesus, In Sickness and Pain

Jesus, in sickness and in pain,

Be near to succor me,

My sinking spirit still sustain;

To Thee I turn, to Thee.

When cares and sorrows thicken round,

And nothing bright I see,

In Thee alone can help be found;

To Thee I turn, to Thee.

Should strong temptations fierce assail,

As if to ruin me,

Then in Thy strength will I prevail,

While still I turn to Thee.

Through all my pilgrimage below,

Whate’er my lot may be,

In joy or sadness, weal or woe,

Jesus, I’ll turn to Thee.

8. We'll Understand It Better By and By (Later you will understand. John

13:7)

We are tossed and driv’n on the restless sea of time;

Somber skies and howling tempests oft succeed a bright sunshine;

In that land of perfect day, when the mists have rolled away,

We will understand it better by and by.

Refrain

By and by, when the morning comes,

When the saints of God are gathered home,

We’ll tell the story how we’ve overcome,

For we’ll understand it better by and by.

We are often destitute of the things that life demands,

Want of food and want of shelter, thirsty hills and barren lands;

We are trusting in the Lord, and according to God’s Word,

We will understand it better by and by.

Refrain

Trials dark on every hand, and we cannot understand

All the ways that God could lead us to that blessèd promised land;

But He guides us with His eye, and we’ll follow till we die,

For we’ll understand it better by and by.

Refrain

Temptations, hidden snares often take us unawares,

And our hearts are made to bleed for a thoughtless word or deed;

And we wonder why the test when we try to do our best,

But we’ll understand it better by and by.

Either Jesus, or Bible Pocket Promise Books, are

small, quick reference books available in Christian

book stores. The table of contents lists themes or

words, then directs you to a page within the book that

contains scriptures that cover each subject. For

instance, faith, healing, etc ... They're reasonably

priced.

Dear Aikya,

Here are a few more Christian quotes though I don't have the tool

with word association you are seeking.

"The kindgom of God does not come with your careful observation, nor

will people say, "Here it is." or "There it is," because the kingdom

of God is within you."

St. Luke, 17:21

Old Testament

"I have waited, waited for the Lord, and he stooped toward me and

heard my cry. He drew me out of the pit of destruction, out of the

mud of the swamp; he set my feet upon a crag; he made firm my steps.

And he put a new song into my mouth, a hymn to our God. Many shall

look on in awe and trust in the Lord." Psalm 39;2-4

"When a man believes in Me, he does not believe in Me only, but in

the One who sent Me. When he looks at Me, he sees the One who sent

Me. I have come into the world as a light so that no one who believes

in Me should stay in darkness." John 12:12

Jyotsna,

Thanks you so much for this beautiful poem. It seems so perfect for

this moment for the many people who have suffered so much. So many

ask "How could God do this?" Other than replying, "What makes you

think God did it?"--our poem helped remind us of God's larger view.

Well, I'm not sure all of these are on target for Katrina Survivors,

but thanks, Amarnath.

I've pulled out a few prayers from that collection of prayers to Amma

for prisoners and have been trying to say them daily. I turned two of

the ones you sent into Morning Prayers. I have started to say them

every morning and I so deeply appreciate them. They are such a

beautiful way to start the day. Let me pot them aain here for others

to consider sayig them in the monring.

Also, although I have never met you, Amarnath, since I am saying these

prayers composed by you evry day, I feel very close to you in a

graceand love-filled way.

Dear Chidnand,

I so appreciate your help and the help of everyobdy else who is

looking for and sharing inspring quotation. Just last night at

satsang a handful of people came up to me and said "I'd love to write

letters of love and support but I can't imagine what I'd say.

Chidanand, you and the others who have taken time to look for these

ems came remove that problem. We don't have to write master's theses;

we just can decorate a card with one of these quotations and sign it

with a simple sentence and love.

Not only that but you're finding better things than I might have.

Dear Keval,

Thanks and blessings to you for your excellent memory of the Torah

reading from your Bar Mitvah. I am getting a little teary again

because to me. I am allowed my own interpretation as you were on that

first day, called to the Torah. Thirty years ago you read a

description of Amma and all of us.
