Namah Shivayah all...

My mom and I went to the Southfield Ramada Inn today. We were

originally going to drop the collection for Katrina victims off, but

ended up staying and helping sort through all of the things that

people had donated.

A conversation I had with a little girl, probably aged around four

years, as she was picking through the toy and doll bin at the

conference-room-cum-donation-center at her new temporary home. She was

wearing a pink sparkly top, her hair in braids, and her accent very

thick. I recognized her as an evacuee right away, because I've heard

that accent before while on vacation in New Orleans. Her brother was

looking through the bin with trucks right next to us, where he was

putting every single truck he could find into his little bag. The girl

was carrying a very squishy pink and purple stuffed whale.

Erica: "Whatcha got there, pretty girl?"

Girl: "Issa baby!"

"I see that. I like that baby. It matches your shirt!"

"Yup. I likes it too because it is real soft."

"I like this one too. It's real soft too. Do you want to take this one

too?", as I held up a very soft plush bear.

"No, but OOH! Look at this one. It's HULK. He kinda scrry though. I

dun like this one."

"I don't like it either. Did you see these?", as I held up sparkly

pink and purple stick-on earrings and a little play makeup case.

"Yeah, I sawr it. Those girls in thrrre they had everythang. Everythang."

"Like what?"

"Just everythang."

"Well, who are you here with?"

"Muh daddy. He over therre. And dis my brother."

"He likes trucks, huh?"

"Yup. He a boy."

"Well, you can take anything you want from in here, as long as your

daddy says it's okay."

"Anything?"

"Yep. Just ask your daddy first." And I continued to sort through the

toys and books for a second, when she tapped me on the leg, her eyes

as wide as Christmas morning. She was holding a yellow rubber duck in

her little hand and smiling very wide.

She said, "I need this one. Cause my house's full of water. But it'll

be okay cuz the Red Cross is gunna help us. Yep. Red Cross. Red Cross..."

My heart broke into a million pieces just then.

Praying that Mother's love reaches that little girl's heart, and that

her Red Cross helps her get her house back to where she doesn't need a

rubber duckie to be in it...

With love and tears in my eyes,

Erica

This was so touching! I was choked up and in tears as I read this. Children

are so strong, resilient, and truthful... we could all earn great lessons of

love and of life by being more childlike...
