personal story about loss and blessings

ONS,

We had a house fire when I was eight or nine, and we

lost everything. The red cross came and brought us all

these little things you would never think of needing

in an emergency, like towels. When I returned to

school, all the kids from my class had brought a

stuffed animal, toy or book for me. People came and

brought us dinner, and gave us bedding and air

mattresses.

It made such an impression on me, what it feels like

to be on the receiving end of charity. You can really

feel the love in people when they are helping you.

Although we had lost all our possesions, we had this

incredible opportunity to see the deep goodness in so

many people. I could never explain my family's

gratitude, we felt so blessed, even though we had so

little. Our community had come together to support us.

I was just thinking about how the Katrina survivors

must be feeling, displaced and totally dependant on

the kindness of strangers. It's very humbling, there

is no room for pride. But it can also be such a

blessing if the community (in this case the whole

country) can come together to support each other.

I read stories about people all over the country

taking families and stranded individuals into their

homes. Then I go to MSN.com and see the top story

today being the 40 best sports bars in the US or

something and I just want to bang my head against a

wall. Is that really newsworthy while we are still

fighting for the lives, safety and future of our

family in the south?

Many, many thoughts today.

love,

Prajna

Yes Prajna,

On the flip side, Swami Vivekananda once said that we must be grateful to be

given the opportunity to give.. for giving blesses the "giver" even more than

the "receiver"... so He said that we should be grateful to those accepting our

charity, because by accepting our gift they are actually blessing us.
