Amma gives houses and hope

Mysore, Sept. 6 (NMG)- The village of Pudukkuppam in Cuddalore district,

Tamil Nadu, which lost 123 of its inhabitants and most of its residences

to the killer tsunami in December 2004, has come back to life again.

The streets are now alive with people having hopes in their eyes -- the

hope of being able to lead a normal life, thanks to Mata Amritanandamayi

Mutt, which has built 87 houses for those who lost their dwellings.

Swami Ramakrishnanandapuri, a senior disciple of Mata Amritanandamayi,

handed over the keys of these houses to the District Collector Gagandeep

Singh at a function at the village temple recently and the DC will allot

them to the beneficiaries.

Apart from this, the Mutt has distributed 25 boats, 28 engines for

boats, funded the repair of 30 damaged boats and engines.

This is the first housing project in Tamil Nadu to be completed in three

months time after the land was allotted for rehabilitation of tsunami

survivors. The Mutt, in its second phase of housing project in the

village, plans to build another 80 houses.

The Mutt will also handover 27 houses to beneficiaries at Sambasivapuram

in Kanyakumari. Work on 350 houses at Nagapattinam, which is in

progress, will be handed over to the beneficiaries in the next two months.

Amritanandamayi Mutt is constructing 2,500 houses in Tamil Nadu and

about 6,000 houses all over India and Sri Lanka to be handed over to the

needy and deserving free of cost. The Mutt is the first institution in

Kerala to complete and hand-over the houses to tsunami survivors in

April 2005.

Till date, Amritanandamayi Mutt has handed over 122 houses to

beneficiaries in Kerala and plans to handover another 500 houses in

Alappad Panchayat before 27th of this month, which happens to be the

52nd birthday of Amma, who has pledged Rs. 100 crore towards tsunami

relief, the largest from a private charitable institution.
