Guest guest
Namah Shivaya, Here's an update for our area: We are receiving about 2,000 families-STARTING TOMORROW, TUESDAY SEPT 6TH. Our state may take more survivors as the need arises. They will be flown to Lambert St. Louis Airport. From there, they will be medically assessed, provided food and a place to sleep-possibly for up to 72 hrs, maybe less. They will be transferred to a facility that had been a prison (but does not look like one now!-no bars, steel doors, etc) It has been totally transformed by volunteers who worked 24 hrs a day to remodel it. There are 3 pods with main dining/recreational areas. A 24 hr medical clinic will be available as well as schooling for the children. All of this is currently being worked out. We made posters just to try to make the families and those coming feel loved and welcomed. We hope to have staffing available to simply "be there" to make them feel embraced. I attended a training and briefing session today for this relief effort sponsored by the Salvation Army. A lot of clothing, etc was collected. Any overage will be sent to the disaster areas. They are taking down people's skills, etc to place them. They only want trained volunteers. The training was an outline of the red tape and hierarchy to accomplish things. It probably is somewhat useful (to know how difficult it might be) but may also be a deterrent. Everyone also had to get a police background check before they'd allow them to work at the facility (for what I guess what are obvious reasons.) They will be needing psychologists for the trauma-kids are not eating, drinking due to stress. I know doctors, teachers, and volunteers on all levels will be needed but this training is required to volunteer. I figured I might as well get it so I could help as soon as I'm needed. They plan to call volunteers once background checks are submitted. I told them I work for the school district-I have the background check and even an FBI one-but they have to run their own. On the bright side, I can work anywhere in the world with their certification for life. Some of you had items to send and we can use them here if you would like. We can definitely use it. We also await what others ways we can help through Amma's direction thru Swami Dayamrita. in Her service, Adriane Bradley St. Louis Area Satsang 636-928-3554 -- a..
