Guest guest
Dear Friends, As many of you know, Hurricane Katrina has blazed a trail of devastation throughout Louisiana, Mississippi, Florida and Alabama. Across the Gulf Coast, Katrina engulfed thousands of homes and decimated the landscape in what could become the most destructive storm in U.S. history. Victims are stranded and in need of immediate medical care, food and water, and tens of thousands of people will need temporary housing for months. The AMERICAN HINDU ASSOCIATION, INC, a Tax-Exempt Organization under Internal Revenue Code, Section 501©(3), is soliciting your tax-deductible contribution to help the Victims of Hurricane Katrina. We cannot leave our brothers and sisters at the mercy of their fate. At this moment they need our help with the calamity that has fallen upon them, to survive hunger and disease, and to rebuild their lives. AHA will channel 100% of your generous contributions to the voluntary, non-governmental organizations, who have been engaged in the relief and rehabilitation of victims in the past. The AHA is administered by volunteers who are not paid for their work. We have set up an emergency fund to raise money for the victims of this disaster. If you wish to contribute to our disaster relief fund by check, please make the check payable to American Hindu Association and write " Victims of Hurricane Katrina " in the memo area. For further information please contact us whindu. AMERICAN HINDU ASSOCIATION Victims of Hurricane Katrina P.O.Box 55405 Madison WI 53705 You can also hand your check personally to one of the AHA committee members at the weekly Friday satsang or during the Saturday Balagokulam program on September 10, 2005. Guest guest
I just received this letter from a man I know only from Ebay who buys and sells some similiar collectible items to myself. I called him the other day because his auctions weren't going well and I wanted to give him at least a little financial help, even though I don't really have it go give right now, by buying some items of his that I really don't need or want. Here is a letter he sent me today. I thought since so many people had been interested in the Katrina victims in the past, that it might be of interest to hear what is at least one person's experience. I wish there was more we could do for people like him and I only hope that the $1M that Amma gave the Bush-Clinton fund actually gets into the hands of the people who so desperately need it. Also I don't have Dayamrita's email handy. I am sending this to the general M.A. Center mailbox. Maybe someone can forward this on to him as well, should they have his email. I'm sending it to a friend to read to Amma on the Australian Tour as well. Jai Maa! Surya - The Little Toy Company, Ltd Mahamuni Tuesday, March 28, 2006 1:24 PM Katrina ...first of all, thank you for contacting me and sending such good feeling my way. You just have no idea how awful it is around here because of the storm. We live on 2 acres, of which had approximately 75 beautiful oaks and pine trees around the property. Ponchatoula is about 40 miles from New Orleans. It looked like a forest driving by our home. After the storm and the tornado that came through our yard, 40 trees fell and 3 fell on the house. Our little country 1700 sq. ft house was nearly destroyed. The insurance company has been here several times and in each case, they squacked at the idea that we really wanted to repair this home. Why were we paying for insurance for over 57 years if we didn't want to use this insurance when we needed it? Anyway, they paid us $40,000.00 for a $89,000.00 estimate. Litigation aside, they feel that they are bigger than us and have more assets to fight this request of ours. Needless to say, lawyers want 33%-50% plus court costs, etc, for us to fight for the remainder of the estimate. They estimate that we would be lucky to get $15,000.00 and there is no guarantee of that. In addition to this, they want $5000.00 to start the process. Can you believe that? I have MS and live at home with this disease and do as best as I can to make my life and the life of my family as comfortable as possible. I don't complain and only tell you this so that you know the whole story. Ellen teaches religion for about $22.000 at St. Joseph in Ponchatoula, Louisiana near our home. We lost one car because of the storm and are getting by better than most. If you could see what people have to deal with in New Orleans, you would cry. Literally cry for them. People are still living under the overpasses around the city. What you see on the television is political banter that, to me, is rediculous. When Bush and Clinton came to New Orleans with their money, it was glorious! But think about that money for a minute. How is the mayor or the govenor to distribute it to the people? Who should get the money? They fight and fight over this daily and the people suffer. My two daughters, Jourdan 18 and Briege 16, have been evacuated to California because the schools here are horrible. The transportation to the schools is gone. The busses are gone. It is a mess to be sure! It is costing Ellen and I nearly $1000 a month to keep them in California. I am not complaining and never will complain. You wanted to know what was what so I am telling you. Just by calling me the other day, you gave me hope again. It is seriously something that does not exist here and that is compassion for those who really only need a hug. Does that sound rediculous or what? McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's and most of the fast food places pay $150 per week plus $3 over minimum wage just to get employees to work for them. There are no people here to work the city. And the people here who can work, most of them, don't have a home so how can they take a shower, go to work and go back home when there is no home to return to? It will change and things will eventually get back to normal. Whatever normal is these days. The real problem is that if you have $200,000 to buy a home you can start over. Think about the people who lost everything. Wherever you live, look at your neighbors. And say if you live in a subdivision with 100 homes. And that suddivision is near two other subdivisions and maybe a mall. Now think about all of the homes with 8 feet of water in them. All of your neighbors and 27 miles in each direction! There are no matresses to buy around here. No refrigerators, microwaves, toasters. They are trying to replace these items in the stores, but it will take time for the 81,000 business that were destroyed. Like I said, I am not complaining. Just know that just by calling me you made my day. It is rare that anyone remembers what happened nearly 7 months ago. I guess that is life and as far as I am concerned, it is a test. Lets hope that most of who lived here pass the test and we can get back to normal again. I have a list of ladder notes of which you might like to see. I will put it together tonight... thanks again for your concern and your friendship. Kindest regards, Hugh and Ellen -- New Messenger with Voice. Call regular phones from your PC and save big.
