Guest guest
Speaking of geeky and bhajans, has anybody out there been to a Siddha Yaga center? They display the words to their bhajans on a screen for everyone to follow. As the number of bhajans continues to expand in Amma's family--soon we will have Bhanajamritam Volume 5--it occurs to me that the bhajans could be put on computer, pulled up and the words and translations displayed on a screen. This requires a huge amount of work in terms of planning and possibly programming. It also requires some kind of device or devices like a laptop and an InFocus plus screen...or even a white wall or a sheet. What I envision is a seva position for someone where someone hears what song the singer intends to sing, finds it in the data base, and displays it on the screen. The same announcement could be made for the folks who still carry the books. After a few more volumes, that would be less appealing. It will be less appealing, no matter what. Who is going to bring 7 or 8 books with them or be able to afford them all. The CD of the database could be sold to satsang groups who were sufficiently techno-savvy and wanted to use it. One advantage of the computer database would be that people who don't have the books (never bought them, didn't bring them today, etc.) could still join in, including brand new people who were brave enough to try some of those tricky Tamil or Malayalam words.Of course, it would save trees and less money might be raised since fewer song books would be sold. On the other hand there could be CD or DVD versions with the music audio) and the words (video) together for folks at home to play on their computers or download into their I-Pods or even cell phones. Guest guest
WOW! I was thinking of the exact same thing last Saturday when we were at the San Ramon ashram and buying a second set of bhajan books for my daughters. I was visualizing a more complex solution though, as an electronic ticker board, that has the lyrics scroll across as the bhajans were being sung. But your idea is more simple to implement I think. All we need is the electronic copies of the bhajan books, like in PDF format, these can be searched for bhajan names and displayed using an InFocus. Not much of programming needed, Acrobat reader is good at searching. I think they must be having the books in some electronic format for publishing. Who would know? May be Arun from Amritapuri? He works at the computer center right? Om Amriteswaryai Namaha -Gopinath --- Aikya Param <aikya wrote: > Speaking of geeky and bhajans, has anybody out there > been to a > Siddha Yaga center? Guest guest
EXCELLENT ideas! I was at a kirtan session once that also used the InFocus with a laptop to display the lyrics to the bhajans. It was great! I am sure that there are PDF or similar formats of the lyrics somewhere, as they do need the files to send them to the publisher. It may be cumbersome to open the files, though, because PDF isn't the most effecient. I'm sure that one of Amma's (many, I am sure!) geeky programmer devotees could make a database that is easily searchable, expandable, and effecient with processor and hard drive time/space. After all, you really just need simple text displayed, even if the database itself is a little more robust. I think the most important thing would be to make the search function very good. Perhaps it could also be searchable by book name/number and page number. Each record should be associated with where the bhajan can be found in the hard copies so those devotees who prefer books can use them too. I know that I, for one, would most likely purchase the database to use on my laptop at home, and probably the 'expansions' (bhajan supplements) each year, so I could take them home. This is, of course, if I knew that I would see the lyrics on the InFocus at the programs. It is quite cumbersome to carry around so many bhajan books and supplements. I have never gotten around to purchasing any because of this fact. It seems so impractical for me to carry them around all the time at programs etc. Great ideas!! Guest guest
most of the books, including the Matruvani are edited on pagemaker (adobe). none of the softcopies are on sale. if you need any further info, please contact Sw. Guest guest
This is neat. Gopinath, would you want to talk to Br. Dayamrita about this? It sounds a lot easier than I thought to implement. We might even be able to have a test version ready to try for November tour. One neat part about this is that bhajans in the supplement books could easily be added each year if the songs were not already in the database. The audio visual version for home sales will take longer Aikya Ammachi, "Arun Raj" <jaimaa@g...> wrote: > most of the books, including the Matruvani are edited on pagemaker (adobe). none of the softcopies are on sale. > > if you need any further info, please contact Sw. Kathakali is story telling with words and gestures, and very stylized, so it was useful. I have also seen English supertitles shown above an opera stage in San Francisco.
