The Germans shelled Madras? (while Shubash Chandra

Bose was making nice with Uncle Adolf??) I wouldn't

call myself a World War II historian, but I have never

heard of that incident. Unless some Luftwaffe bomber

pilots got very lost..but the Germans had enough to

deal with, fighting the western allies and the Russian

front, to bother with an attack on India. I don't

even think that there were ever any u-boats patroling

that part of the Indian Ocean. Are you sure it wasn't

the Japanese?

Mike,

I think it was the germans- but on retrospect , it is more likely that it was

the japanese- in any case, i know for sure a shell landed in madras- i was

brought up in madras and there is a small stone monument there at the point

where the shell landed- my father showed it to me when i was a kid.

Your friendly ex-librarian looked it up:

World War II Plus 55 - April 5 through April 11, 1942

Japanese aircraft from the carrier Ryujo bomb Madras in India, scaring local

authorities ... Japanese guns move into position and start shelling Corregidor
