Guest guest
Amma attacker remanded to judicial custody *Press Trust of India* Kollam, August 22, 2005 The 47-year-old man, who was arrested for attempting to attack spiritual leader Mata Amritanandamayi at her ashram on Sunday, was remanded to judicial custody till September 5 by a lower court in Kollam on Monday evening. While police discounted the possibility of the incident being pre-planned, Mutt authorities have viewed it seriously. The man, identified as Pavithran, a rubber-tapper from Idukki district, was produced before the first class magistrate at Karunagappally near the Amrithapuri Ashram of Vallikkavu. He has been charged under 307 IPC (attempt to murder). Police teams had been sent to Pavithran's native village at Idukki and to another place in Palakkad district, where he had been working as a rubber-tapper, to find out his background and antecedents, police sources said. Pavithran's father told journalists that he was a devotee of Amma, as the Mata is known among her followers and that he used to visit the Mutt. He said Pavithran had been under treatment of a psychiatrist for the last few years. Unfazed by what had happened, Amma urged her devotees not to create any problem out of Sunday's incident and to adopt a forget-and-forgive approach towards the incident. Meanwhile, Amma's prayer-meetings and other routine ceremonies of the ashram went ahead as usual. While expressing concern at the incident, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said a comprehensive inquiry would be conducted after preliminary investigations.
