I know that people say if the Gayatri mantra is not chanted absolutely

correctly, that it can do the opposite effect on us because of the

energies each syllable raises, etc. However, if that is true, then why

is it not true for our own individual mantras?

Dear Erica and all ~ I fear that if I read too many more posts about

chanting mantras absolutely correctly, my old scrupulousness around spirituality

will come back. This is the special name for this kind of worry or

obsessive/compulsiveness in Catholicism, and it is not regarded as a good thing.

I used to

cross myself 20 times to make sure I had done it correctly.

I take refuge in the Chandi, for not being east Indian, I can rarely be sure

I am pronouncing the transliterations exactly right. Towards the end there

is a section, kshama prarthana, "Prayer For Forgiveness." Here are just a few

phrases (mind now, that this is after one has recited most of the Chandi, a

very important puja):

"Continually I comit thousands of mistakes, Oh Supreme Goddess, but

understanding that I am only trying to serve you, please for give them all."

"I don't know how to welcome you, nor do I know to say goodbye. I don't know

how to worship you, Oh Supreme Goddess, please forgive me."

"Oh Empress of the Gods, I know nothing of mantras; I don't know the ways of

righteous conduct; I am devoid of devotion. But Oh my Goddess, please be

satisfied with my worship, and let it be complete."

"Oh Goddess, whatever performance which was committed through ignorance,

forgetfulness or confusion, all of that, Oh Supreme Goddess, plese forgive, oh

may you be so gracious."

"Oh Goddess. you are the protector of the most secret of mystical secrets.

Please accept the recitation that I have offered, and grant to me the

attainment of perfection."
