Namaste Erica,

The word Mantra in sanskrit is derived from

1. Mana : Mind

2. Trai : Protects

or simple ... that which protects the mind!!

As you may know, mantras can be formed in any languages including

Arabic, Hebrew, English etc. But, sanskrit is supposed to be the

language for spiritual mantras. The vowels/aplhabets in the Sanskrit

language were not coined by somebody ... but its like this ... there

are millions of nadis (micro-subtle-nerves)in our body, which criss-

crosses each other at 51 different points, which form 51 unique

sounds as a result ... which are the origins of Sanskrit language!!!

So when you chant a mantra, these sensitive points in us are

activated!!

So you are correct ... chanting mantra has an effect. Now, it all

depends what kind of mantras they are!! There are saatwik mantras

like Gayatri ... which are very harmless (unlike what you seem to

suggest :)) ... and most of these saatwik mantras are self-

correcting in nature, in that, even if you mis-pronounce it or do it

incorrectly, they have the power in them to guide you to do it

correctly!!!

The tamasic or tantric mantras are like double-edge sword, and you

better know what you are in for ... they typically need an able guru

to guide you. So please beware!!!

Most mantras ... will need to be repeated a lot lot lot of times,

before they show their effects ... because of our karma, it is here

when a realized soul like Ammachi ... who can potentize the mantra

and make it quick and ultra-beneficial, its the result of putting

her extra benevolent karma to you!!!

Hence, a mantra from amma's (goddess) mouth is more potent than any

other syllable in the world!!!

Interesting because sometimes "Trai" is translated as "that which takes away"

and sometimes as "a process". There are not exact translations for Sanskrit and

we really shouldn't think like that.

These things were taught in unbroken lineages of Guru to Disciple. Your Guru

gave you the proper definition according to how he was taught by His Guru and

His own experience.
