I loved alt-pop songs, world music, etc...I ONLY WANT TO HEAR BHAJANS! I listen to various artists and styles of bhajans (some Westerners, some traditional, some modern fusion type things) but it's all devotional. Is this normal? I feel like I'm sort of losing something that was very important to me since I was a very young girl. Dear Erica ~ I don't think you should worry about this. Recently, I found myself turning off the television, which I used as a kind of background when I was on the computer, and tuning in to one of the Amma Bhajan sites. Does it mean anything? I don't know. Perhaps it means you are having a spurt of spiritual growth and want to discard anything that doesn't seem to fit. But please do not throw out or give away or uninstall any of your previously beloved songs. You may, at some point feel yourself coming back to them and may even hear them with "new" ears and understanding. I love music of all kinds, but I have my special favorites ~ Fleetwood Mac, Nickle Creek (an obscure, new, sort of country but would have been folk if that genre still existed in a meaningful form), Sara McGlaughlin, Cyndi Lauper (have you ever listened to "Shine" or "Waters Edge"? ~ some of her songs are unexpectedly spiritual in nature), Dave Matthews, the Grateful Dead, and so many more. I am not suggesting that this is a passing phase, only that it is where you are now, perhaps because of a stronger urge towards the spiritual ... but as you continue to listen to bhajans, eventually you may find yourself drawn back to some of your other music as well. It is not a loss, but a gain. To me all music is inevitably sacred. Or as (fibro-fog moment) one singer put it, "Don't Worry; Be Happy." Jai Ma ~ Linda P.S. If anyone knows the names of the two little American girls who, as they grew, "knew" Sanskrit and have made several bhajan tapes, please let me know. This fibro-fog brain of my has forgotten and I would love to get one of their tapes.
