Dear manoj ~ I did not know that the Gayatri mantra is supposed to be a

secret. Is it? I have a cassette tape with a beautiful chanted version of the

Gayatri mantra, and it is one of my favorite mantras. Another is the Maha

Mrytumjaya Mantra. Of course, my mantra given by Amma is my very favorite, but I

do

say these other Mantras, if I feel the need or on behalf of another. I also

am very fond of the Durga Mantra. Om Hrim Klim Dum Durgayai Namaha

(I bow to She who tears apart thought.) I have lots of thoughts that need to

go through Ma Durga's grinder. : ) Blessings ~ Linda

It's not a secret (neither is the panchadasakshari). But to chant it,

one needs to be initiated.

To be initiated into the Gayatri by Amma is awesome. that is what i

was referring to.

Dear manoj ~ who decided this. I have the Gayatri mantra on a wallet card,

and I periodically chant it. Also, it is part of the Chandi Path, so when I

chant the Chandi, I also chant the Gayatri mantra. :::confused, but like a

puppy, eager to learn (just give me a cookie at the end)::: Blessings ~ Linda

I definitely did not decide this! :).

The Gayatri is considered the queen of all mantras, and it makes sense

that one be initiated into proper usage. The actual ries involved in

chanting the mantra are pretty complex, and the initiation is for all

that.

On the other side:

For most mantras (including the Gayatri), I think, if we approach it

with love and devotion and no selfish interests, it's ok to chant it.

But, to get selfish interests such as wealth and power etc, if one

chants the Gayatri, then one better do it right, which in turn means

one be initiated.

How many of us can truly say we won't chant a mantra for the rest of

our lives in a selfless manner? Probably not many. hence it is better

to be initated before chanting powerful mantras. Otherwise if it

bommerangs, the impact may not be insignificant.

Here is a beautiful post that Nanda (from the list) posted

there some days ago about the Gayatri mantra.

=====================================================================

The story goes that once the Devas, the Shining Ones, wanted to learn

the secrets of the Universe. Since learning about the scientific

aspect - 'atoms' etc. did not quite work out, they went to the Lord.

The Lord gave them the Rig Veda, The Yajur Veda and the Sama Veda to

study. After a couple of eons of study, the Devas lost their patience

and wanted to quit.

The Lord urged them not to give up and decided to teach the essence of

the 3 Vedas in 3 fragments:

Essence of Rig Veda Tat Savitur Varenyam

Essence of Yajur Veda Bhargo Devasya Dheemahi

Essence of Sama Veda Dheeyo Yonah Prachodayaat

The more the Devas practiced and contemplated upon the Gayatri, the

more complexities were revealed to them. So they lost patience again

and went to the Lord to make it simpler still.

So the Lord gave them the essence of the 3 segments, in the 3 words:

Bhur, Bhuvaha, Svaha

The Devas spent a a few cycles of Creation, probably a quadrillion

human years pondering upon the 'maha vyahritis' ie 'Utterances of the

Lord' but became impatient again and urged the Lord to make it simpler

yet.

So He Said "All right I'll make it simpler"

And He taught them AUM
