Since you asked here is my two drachmas worth

Bala wrote the following hypothetical.

Bala wrote:

"Consider this hypothetical scenario.

This Amma devotee of yours, whose mind is not calm and who has health problems

decides to avail himself of the other saints ' holy company. Of course, his

intentions are noble and pure. He just wants his "consciousness " raised and

some peace. Of course, he does not intend to "replace" Amma in his heart or try

for a substitute.

This Amma devotee goes and starts visiting the other saint. At first, it is very

nice. The other saint gives good talks, and sings songs and has His/Her own

devotees who have various wonderful experiences with that saint.

The Amma devotee is very happy . He will get the company of this great saint

and soon he will see Amma again in November.

Just then, unfortunately, something happens. Unknown to this devotee, there

lurks in his subconscious mind a vasana - its called the "comparison" vasana.

This ugly demon starts rearing its head. He starts comparing his beloved Amma

with this other Guru.

He thinks "Oh this guru is not so great.. My Amma is greater than this one..

this Guru is nice but doesn't give darshans like Amma.." and he increases his

ego that way.....

Or he thinks" Oh this Guru does not have such a big following .. Amma has a

such a big following , i hardly get to talk to Her..."

then his subconscious mind does worse things- it thinks " Oh maybe Amma only

sent me to this Guru.. maybe I need special attention from this Guru"... then

gradually the devotee starts getting confused. Unknown to himself, owing to

this confusion , his devotion and commitment to Amma is decreasing. And

surprisingly, he is not devoted to the other Guru either as the same mind which

tricked him is still with him. The mind will continue to paint scenarios, give a

million excuses- till the confused devotee misses both boats, and is left

standing on the land.

What do you think of this hypothetical situation?

bala

FIRST OF ALL THANK YOU BALA FOR HELPING ME IN CLARIFYING MY RELATIONSHIP TO

AMMA. THE STRING IS NOT A BATTLE OF THE GURUS (as some have implied) The

string inquires into the nature of one pointed devotion to the Guru who granted

you a Mantra.

Should I devote one hundred percent of my spiritual aspiration to the Guru who

blessed me with initiation to Her mantra? Another sub-issue? Amma's Supreme

Potency. Is a Sadguru like Amma enough to get me through this dream/nightmare

of Samskara?

I stand in front of Niagra Falls with a teacup. Can Amma this all-pervading

Krishna, the Source Itself fill the cup?

Will it benefit me to look across toward the USA at Buffalo? This light of

lights, sustainer of even the high placed ones is my Guru. But NAH the mind

seeks refuge this way and that way.

Now about your hypothetical

Balu the mind is a trickster. All of the pranks of the mind in your

hypothetical resonate as Truth.

The mind will play the comparison of the Guru game. At the end of all this the

erstwhile devotee will be left in the alley way losing faith in both gurus (thus

his already weak mind) becomes even weaker.

The guru who grants you Mantra alone will get deep into your spiritual bones.

The Sadguru of whose lineage you asked entry can make actual changes in you on a

gut level. She or He will cleanse and purify your un-clean mind. Another guru

may give incredible Satsang and sing kirtan even better than Amma. The other

guru may have many wondrous Siddhis on display.

But it is apparent that the Guru who granted Mantra resides in your Heart and

has taken up the responsibility of guiding you to the other shore.

I bow down to the Holy Feet of Sri Sri Mata Amritanandamayee Devi...

This son is ashamed at his dis-loyalty.

I apologize for my original hypothetical, Baluji

Dear GeorgeSonji,

This sibling does does not consider you at all disloyal. You had

questions, you were agitated, and you were wrestling with your dilemma

in a very honest way. If you had spoken ill of Amma, that might have

been disloyal. You were not even looking to replace Her, you just wanted

Her company in the form of another, it seems to me.

Do not think badly of yourself. It's not true and it is an awful waste

of time. Just my 2 centavos.

Jai Ma!
