Guest guest
We were traveling in the elevator with the Swamini after Guru Purnima was finished early in the morning by that time I guess. She said with humor," We have the world's best guru and we are the world's worst disciples" Refering to the fact that most of where slightly nodding off during the mantra recitation. We had all gathered close around Amma at that time. But this had a bigger meaning for me. I was happy that she said it. It made me think about what i could do to even deserve to be called a "disciple." I'm not sure I deserve that title yet.
Guest guest
Amen! None of us could ever live up to our Guru's example. When there is a True disciple sitting next to His/Her Guru, you can't tell which is the Guru and which is the disciple. May we all strive with increased efforts to reach that Goal with each breath until our last breath! Guest guest
Just thinking... what is the difference between a devotee and a disciple? Does Amma instructs deevotees the same way she instructs Her disciples? Guest guest
I think disciple=devotee. The brahmacharis of course are Amma's monks and have different levels of instruction. The deep orange Swamis are like the dharma black belts. Guest guest
Someone once told me an analogy that: The brahmacharis are lecturers and those staying at the ashram are taking full-time courses while those not staying there are taking the correspondence courses. All will end up with the same degree. Donn Ammachi [Ammachi] On Behalf Of ckeniley2003 Sunday, August 21, 2005 11:20 AM Ammachi Re: Swamini after guru Purnima I think disciple=devotee. Guest guest
OM NAMAH SIVAYA i was once told that a devotee recognizes the Guru's Divinity or greatness but does little to instigate personal change and a disciple makes a concerted effort to follow the example of the Guru. disciples are devotees but devotees are not always disciples. that is my understanding anyway. Guest guest
And for some, it is just a simple mother child relationship. No courses, no exams, no degrees, just comfort and joy. Guest guest
Yes, I agree. As Yogananda says, " 'disciple' and 'discipline' are both etymologically and practically related."
