Could I ask, just out of curiousity, what mantra it was that you were asking

for? Was it the Panchadashaakshari (Panchdasi) or Shodasakshari (Shodasi)

Mantra?

Hi Mahamuni,

Mantra must be remain a secret as per all rules, I was even reluctant

to write what I had written.

It is also my belief that neither Amma nor Karunamayi amma will

initiate anyone in the two mantras below. They will direct the seeker

to a qualified lineage - this is what I think and I could be wrong.

Best wishes,

Actually Yogaman, I know of one rare case when Amma initiated someone into the

Sri Vidya (panchadasakshari). But yes, generally I dont think Amma will

initiate people into that, as that requitres a lot of prior preparation and

purity.

A person I know once asked Amma for that mantra and She refused to give that

mantra to him. I know of only one case where Amma has given that mantra- it is a

very very powerful mantra ... but on the other hand Amma does encourage and

bless people in reading the Saharsranama which I would say is equivalent.

As for those who cannot do the Sri vidya mantra or the sri chakra upasana,

daily repetition of the Sri Lalitha sahasranama itself is equivalent. (

actually the trisathi- but even that I hear that one of Amma's swamijis asked

someone not to repet that without initiation ).

If you dont mind, lets have an off line discussion on this.

Om Amriteshwaryai Namah

I also personally saw Amma initiate someone into the panchadasakshari (15

syllable) mantra at San Ramon. The young man, named Kali Das, had been doing

many different pujas for quite a while and was going to move to Amritapuri right

after Tour, though he had just met Mother. He was living at the Ramakrsna

Mission I believe. I don't know what happen to him as I never saw him again.

Bala, in all truth, I think it is difficult to say that repeating the Sri

Lalitha Sahasranama is equivalent to doing the entire

practice/practices/mantras, etc of Sri Vidya worship, including the Trisathi

which was given to Agastya after the Stotram and Sahasranama. I guess it

depends on your point of view. This is like saying that repeating the

Mahishashura Mardini Stotram is equivalent to chanting the entire 700 verses of

the Sri Sri Chandi, which I know some claim is the case. Well then why would

anyone chant the Sri Sri Chandi?

In one sense it is enough just to say "OM". I guess it depends on the sadhak

and his/her unique place and disposition. But this is not to say that repeating

the 1000 names of Sri Lalitha Devi is not VERY POWERFUL, because it is. Even

the 108 names from the puja is VERY POWERFUL, IMHO.

But I do know that True and Deep Faith in Amma is enough to take one to the

goal.

Jai Maa!

Yogaman,

Only your actual mantra must remain secret, as it my understanding. Telling

someone your Istha Deva or type of mantra or number of syllables is not, though

there generally is no reason to discuss such things.

I was only curious since you brought it up.

I originally planned on "upgrading" my mantra eventually to the 16-

syllable mantra (shodasakshari), keeping this in the back of my

mind. I later asked Amma for a different mantra to help me at the

time of a problem, and it was then that she asked, "I thought you

wanted the 16-syllable mantra?". Like a fool I denied it, and was

just happy she initiated me into the one I wanted at the time, which

was long like the 16-syllable one, but I have since stopped using

it. My experience with the 15 and 16 syllable mantras is that is

really is detrimental to a regular person's growth as warned by

some: With good concentration, the mantra made everything in my

mind completely still, like the sudden stopping of a vibrating

guitar string that you didn't realize was playing, and it also saps

your energy in the process, needing to sleep it off. You also start

to see things as they are, which can interfere with your thoughts

and desires, causing mental tension. It's hard to have lust for a

pretty woman if your mind makes you feel like she's your sister,

mother or yourself (reality bites).

Daily chanting of the LS would be nice, but I know few people who

can do it because it requires enough energy to maintain your

concentration, which only comes after much practicing and adequate

rest. I have also heard that the 300 names (trisati) is only for

advanced sadhaks because it contains the 15-syllable mantra.

It does not just contain the 15-syllable mantra, it IS the 15-

syllable mantra.

The majestic beauty of the trishati is in:

1. the melody

2. the majestic harmony (20 awesome verses for each syllable of the

mantra; and each set of 20 verses has the exact same number of

syllables. hence 15*20 = 300)

3. the awesome meaning behind each of these verses.

Even in the web-based world, google Lalita Sahashranama and you get

tons of material. Try googling Lalita Trishati and see how

frustrating the search gets!

Sri Vidya knows how to keep Herself secret!

Thanks for the info. It was interesting to hear that. Anyway, there

are 15 different kinds of Panchadasakshari's among which are the

three most popular -kadi,sadi and hadi. It is possible that rules for

initiation of some of these are different.. No doubt it is a supreme

blessing to receive it from Devi Herself (i.e. Amma LOL).

A senior upasak once told me that after successive initiations of

Shodasi, Mahashodasi and Parashodasi (possibly additional ones), one

comes back to Bala mantra(traditions may differ), which generally is

given at the beginning. So this sadhak was opining that the Bala

mantra is the most powerful. Now that sounds like your name Bala :-).

Offline is fine if you want to drop a line.

So I stand corrected. Amma does initiate a few select ones in those

someone into the Sri Vidya (panchadasakshari). But yes, generally I

dont think Amma will initiate people into that, as that requitres a

lot of prior preparation and purity.

to give that mantra to him. I know of only one case where Amma has

given that mantra- it is a very very powerful mantra ... but on the

other hand Amma does encourage and bless people in reading the

Saharsranama which I would say is equivalent.

upasana, daily repetition of the Sri Lalitha sahasranama itself is

equivalent. ( actually the trisathi- but even that I hear that one of

Amma's swamijis asked someone not to repet that without initiation ).
