This date used to change from year to year ( that is the gregorian calender date used to change). So on some years the karthika star would fall on oct 1st, sometimes on sept 26th , sometimes on sep 30th etc. As the crowds grew larger, this was confusing for many people. So the ashram decided to keep it fixed on a particular date. The date recorded was sept 27th in most books ( as you see sept 27th 1953 was also karthika nakshatra day) and Amma's parents did not note the particular year accurately... So sept 27th was accepted as the date... Finally- Amma's true and ONLY birthday is the day we open our hearts with Love. The day we cry for God and for our fellow man, is the day Amma is born in us... Dear bala ~ this is so beautifully written and explained. I did not know that the gregorian calendar dates changed while the vedic calendar dates ... did not? Or perhaps changed according to the rhythm of the celestial realm. In any case, picking a particular date so that people won't be consfused makes so much sense. And then, of course, we go and get all confused anyhow and rattle on about it. You final statement is the one that makes the most sense to me, and I thank you. It is pure truth; it is poetry. Oh bala, my goodness, your writing caused a song to wing its way out of my heart this morning. I wish everyone could hear the melody. (I know nothing of such things as how to get melodies or songs from my mouth to the computer ... if anyone knows, perhaps they can write to me off-digest, as I would love to share some of my Amma songs with the group.) Anyway, here it is, possibly not complete, but humbly offered to Mother's Birthday in our Hearts. Jai Ma ~ Linda P.S. Pahari Maa, your inspiration is in these words too. Now if only I knew the old "do-a-deer, a female deer" well enough to put the do re mi's and such, then people would be able to hear the melody. Amma's Birthday 1. Amma's Birthday, Amma's Birthday, is the day that we open our hearts. Amma's Birthday, Amma's Birthday, is the day we stop feeling apart. Chorus When we know All as One; when we love one as All, at that moment, on that very day that becomes for us Amma's birthday. 2. Amma's Birthday, Amma's Birthday, is the day we let go of our fears. Amma's Birthday, Amma's Birthday, is the day our love flows like tears. Chorus 3. Amma's Birthday, Amma's Birthday, is the day we stand tall and true. Amma's Birthday, Amma's Birthday, is the day we have nothing more to prove. Chorus 4. Amma's Birthday, Amma's Birthday, is the day that our spirits take wing. Chorus When we know All as One; when we love one as All, at that moment, on that very day that becomes for us Amma's birthday. Amma's Birthday, Amma's Birthday, is the day when our joyful souls sing. © Linda Talbott 2005 for Amma

Guest guest
Dear Linda Your song is simply beautiful... I am glad Amma made me write something that initiated such a beautiful outburst from you.. I remember another beautiful bhajan referring to Amma's birth-( jaya jaya devi dayamayi ambe..) in that there is a beautiful verse: "Patitarkayi nee janmam edutthu parahitame nin paavana lakshyam nara roopam satchinmaya roopam Amritanandamayi mama Janani" It means "You have taken birth for the sake of the fallen souls, For the The welfare of others is your sole pure aim Though You are Pure Existence and Conciousness , you have taken this human Form O my Mother Amritanandamayi" bala nierika wrote: bala wrote: In the early years, Amma's b'day used to be celebrated according to the hindu astrological calender- that is on Krithika nakshatra day in the month of kanni( when the vedic calender puts the sun in virgo).
