It is the greatest thing that we can aspire to learn, and yet it is probably what we have understood the least. It is much easier to learn how to meditate, chant or do seva, than to truly love. But, unless we have learned how to love, nothing else really matters. Many years ago, Amma was talking to me, and I wanted to talk about tapas and vairagya with Her. But she kept on bringing the subject back to love. I was a little annoyed by this because I wanted to talk about something "deeper" with Her. But I could not get Amma away from the subject of love. Finally I said to Her, "But I don't want love!" Amma's reply was, "Then what are you existing for?" Clearly, from Her point of view, love is not only the essence of spirituality, it is the essence of life itself. Dear GeorgeSon ~ thank you for sharing this precious vignette with me. Recently I was talking to someone about Amma, and the person said they had once heard her say, "The only thing is Love." This reminds me much of the "Course In Miracles" and "Conversations With God," if you are familiar with them. I must have met Amma much earlier than I remember because I have been saying 1985 (my memory is not what it used to be), but I remember seeing Amma when Gayatri was her primary assistant, and I remember Gayatri becoming a swamini, and then suddenly she was gone. It is interesting that Amma's new swamini is also from Austrailia. Blessings ~ Linda
Guest guest
.....they had once heard her say, "The only thing is Love." Many years ago I had the privelage to be with my father when his body died. While looking down at his former body, I realized that of all the things he had accomplished in 70+ years of life & all the possessions he had aquired, the ONLY thing that mattered was love. It was quite profound.
Guest guest
Namaste: If I were forced to chose one word to describe Amma it would be LOVE. As referenced in Swamini's excerpt, I do not like to think about love. Arcane Vedanta is more appealing to me than love. Amma implies again and again that we incarnate to manifest our already existing reservoir of love.
