Cannes Film Festival

Of the 14 films selected (out of competition) this

year for the Cannes Film Festival is DARSHAN by French

film director, Jan Kounen.

(Two of the other films being shown in this festival category include Star

Wars by George Lucas and the latest Woody Allen film.) Because Cannes is the

most important film festival in the world, it is a tremendous honor for any

film to be included.

DARSHAN

SYNPOSIS:

Throughout its history, India has kept a profound

sense of the sacred. Hindu tradition offers a

privileged place to great souls (Mahatma), to

spiritual guides. As a travel diary deep inside the

heart of India and Hinduism, Darshan focuses on one of

the most important Mahatmas still alive : Amma.

This woman has won a very important place in the

Indian community today. Her fight for peace, against

poverty and illiteracy earned her the Gandhi King

Prize in 2002 (previously awarded to great

personalities such as Khofi Annan or Nelson

Mandela). For the very first time, Amma agreed to open

the doors of her own world to a foreign director. Jan

Kounen had the opportunity to accompany her across

India, from Jaipur to Calcutta, via Benares. Darshan

invites the audience to discover and better understand

what makes Indian spirituality so unique.

EXTRACT OF DIALOGUES: To gain peace of mind, we must

be ready to battle. Not to battle with real weapons,

but with love, devotion and sacrifice. A battle

without bloodshed. Only peace and love. Look at our

society. We spend a lot of money travelling to the

depths of the oceans and space to study them. But we

never travel to our inner world, which is so close at

hand. Everyone loves TVs with bigger screens. But as

the screens get bigger, our hearts get smaller. We

have vacuum cleaners that suck up the tiniest dirt.

Yet we are not ready to clean the dirt from our minds.

Our minds make our lives beautiful or ugly. We try to

learn about the outside world, but never the inner

world. We try to right the outside world and forget to

right ourselves. We are slaves to the outside world.

We bear many physical and mental scars. We bear many

unhealed wounds. Total happiness cannot come from the

outside world. It's like trying to hold the sky or

sail across land. Life is short, we must try to

celebrate it. You hold only this moment in your hands.

This is the most exciting news I have heard this year.

This will bring great recognition of Amma to those who do not keep up with

world events but do keep up with things such as this, especially that many

from Hollywood and influencers of popular culture will be present at the

film festival. I am hoping this may bring great recognition to Amma in the

United States. Other spiritual leaders such as the Dalai Lama were brought

into recognition in popular culture through film, celebrity interest, etc.

Some may question if this is a good way for Amma to become known, but I feel

that the more awareness of Amma, and her teachings through this medium is a

good thing. The more people that she is able to reach.
