Does anyone have experiences to share about making this transition? Can I change the name written on my checks? Dear Sweta ~ my understanding of this is that so long as you are not using the alternate name (many artists and writers have "pen" names) to defraud anyone, there is nothing wrong about changing your name to Sweta. To be absolutely safe, though, when you can afford it, you may want to do it legally. As far as your work goes, you may just want to continue using "June" there, as it might be too confusing or create too many questions. I know when my sister first got her name from Amma, she used it all the time, signed her letters with it, etc. I'm not sure, though, if she put it on her checks. The bank might be able to help you with that one. Good luck. By the way, what does Sweta mean? Blessings ~ Linda
Guest guest
Namah Shivaya Sweta, Many years ago I was told by an attorney friend that a person can use any name they want, as long as it is not intended to defraud, as Linda said. I personally use my maiden name, my married name or both. On anything legal I use my married name, although I never have legally changed it from my maiden name. And then there is my first name, and the name Mother gave me. If I had a rap sheet the aka list would be long with all of the possible combinations ;-) Jai Ma Prasadini nierika wrote: > >Sweta wrote: > >Although I can't afford to change my name legally right now, I want to use >the sspiritual name instead of my legal name. Guest guest
I went through an actual legal name change, and it was both exhausting and expensive (around $350), involving several trips to the courthouse, etc. I do (sort of) use my spiritual name at school and for the yoga and meditation classes I teach, but my legal name goes on all checks, tax records, blah, blah, blah. Guest guest
By the way, what does Sweta mean? In Sanskrit, Sweta means purity, as in pure white. A devotee from Japan said that June has the same meaning in Japanese! Mail Mobile Take Mail with you! Check email on your mobile phone. Guest guest
That is very interesting! I once met a womn with the spiritual name Chandra (I'm pretty sure), which meant "flower", her first name was Rosa, and she was very much into flowers and plants. Dear Sweta ~ wow! Good for you! How wonderful that your coworkers and clients will be using your spiritual name from now on. No doubt this will make your experience with your job ever more a reminder of service to the Guru and enrich your interactions at work. Feelings about fear of commitment arose, as did thoughts about potential doubts about Amma... The morning I announced that I wanted to be called Sweta at work, it triggered a misunderstanding & large conflict with a coworker...But, after fearing others would question my mental stability for using my Hindu name, the psychiatrist at work was probably the most supportive of it. I don't know if my family will ever make the mental adjustments necessary to accept it. One son thinks I'm cursed, especially financially, by my Hindu name & ndu beliefs... One real plus, is that I feel I'm more fully giving myself to Amma, by giving her my birth name. Dear Sweta ~ I think what you have been going through is quite "normal," whatever that means. In any relationship, each new step further into the relationship may bring doubts, fear, etc. I am glad you were able to work through that and that the psychiatrist at your job supports your using you true name. As for family ... do they ever really support us when we are being genuine? Perhaps some do, but my experience is as yours. Seeing your taking your spiritual name one step further and surrendering your birth name to Amma is such a wonderful gift.
