I feel that Amma is beyond the personality and whatever "actions" she takes that may be deemed harsh, are taken for the sake of the seeker....not to fulfill her own ego gratification (as may have been implied by "personality"). Personality is the sense of "I" and is a complete illusion. In order for Amma to have done and continue to do the things she has done, it seems that she would have to be beyond personality/ego. It is the goal of us to reach that state, not her....for she has. We may perceive her to have "personality/ego" because that is the only way our minds can make sense of things. I believe that she is able to manifest personality (anger, being tough with students) to fit the purpose at hand, similar to what she does when she channels the mood of the Goddess in Devi Bhava or the way she became the playful Krishna at Krishna Bhava. How can you say that a Guru does not have to be kind and loving? Love is all there is. Amma is the embodiment of love and compassion. Everything she does and everything she teaches is based in pure, compassionate love. I don't understand how you could perceive this otherwise, so please enlighten me. I agree with all that and didn't mean to imply that she does anything to fulfill an individual personality, although in some small way an enlightened individual still does that. For example, Amma likes certain foods. Not because they fulfill some cosmic purpose, but because she - Amma - enjoys the taste of them. Not a problem. Doesn't mean she's not Brahman. > > We may perceive her to have "personality/ego" because that is the only way > our minds can make sense of things. No problem with that either. I just read on another chat group the story of the Avatar Narasimha eviscerating Prahlada's father Hiranyakashipu. He did so out of love for his devote Prahlada, but I'm sure it was also good for Hiranyakashipu. God was always liberating demons in the Puranas by killing them. Many of them volunteered to be killed that way before incarnating. Reportedly Amma has cooled it a bit in recent years, as she was advised that she couldn't be so wild and crazy if she was going to become world famous. I'm also told that her close disciples regret this. They liked the Kali thing. > > How can you say that a Guru does not have to be kind and loving? I didn't say that. I have never heard this. Where did you hear this? What do you mean by "world famous"? I thought we both were on common ground with the personality/ego thing. Fame is ego gratification unless what was meant by it was reaching more people. I have never heard such a thing and I cannot imagine Amma, a divine being, to have a goal of being "world famous". Maybe that was a poor choice of words?? Om Namah Shivayah, Michelle

I am saying she does things to help people. She realized that being a wild woman was going to compromise her ability to help people, so she toned it down. >I have never heard such a thing and I cannot > imagine Amma, a divine being, to have a goal of being "world famous". Her destiny, not her goal. And an evident reality, so she had to change her ways accordingly. > Maybe that was a poor choice of words?? Probably so. Guest guest
I feel this... Amma's goal is to help as many people as possible. For her message to reach as many people as possible. In order to do this, if she needs to, she will change her image. It does not mean inauthenticity, I do not feel - "Rick Archer" <rick <Ammachi> Monday, April 25, 2005 11:11 PM Re: Re: Doubting The Guru's Grace/Amma's Actions > > on 4/25/05 10:59 PM, Michelle at michellewalsh88 wrote: >> >> You wrote: >> >> "Amma has cooled it a bit in recent years, as she was advised that >> she couldn't be so wild and crazy if she was going to become world >> famous." >> >> I have never heard this. Guest guest
Om Namah Shivaya: Amma always advises that we respond rather than react. The perception that Amma enjoys fame is worthy of examination. After careful use of one's skill in critical thinking one can form a viewpoint. If Amma is lured by "fame" lets investigate what Her rewards might be. She sits for up to 15 hours a day in a often hot crowded room without exemplary ventilation. Amma does not hob nob with the Donald Trump's or Paris Hilton's to my knowledge. The Holy Mother has never taken even a single day for vacation in all Her recorded history. Nary a weekend. Zero days off - period. At Amritapuri She sleeps in a relatively small ascetic room. Her attendants have great difficulty getting Her to eat properly. So thus we have never seen Amma at a "trendy" restaurant. It also appears Ammachi attends no concerts or sits ringside at a Las Vegas Boxing events to be seen with the glitzy A List types. Additionally Amma refuses to fly from point to point during the U.S tour instead preferring a long hot ride in a RV. There is a paucity of apparent benefits of fame here. Sorry. If that be the case what would Amma get for that demon in disguise known as fame? Her "lifestyle" is open for all to view on a daily basis. Once again I respect contrary opinions on this and do not wish to argue about this. Just sharing my two centavos. Guest guest
Georgeson, This is exactly what I thought. Thanks to you for putting it so eloquently.
