Prisoners and Money and Our Seva

As most everybody probably knows, we don't give money in connection

with our seva. Meanwhile, the prisoners we write to are often in

need of money. Here's why--as a litle background for the note

card/calendar posts.

In U.S. prisons, prisoners have to buy everything from the prison

commissary. Some states give them nothing. They have to buy their

clothing, hygeine items, paper, envelopes, stamps, etc. If they

have money, they can buy computers and televisions but that's on the

other end of what I'm talking here. If a prisoner does not have

personal savings or a family in a position to send money, things can

be very difficult.

Another aspect is that slavery is legal according to the U.S.

constitution in U.S. prisons. Prisoners can be forced to work and

not be paid or be paid so little that they are always in debt to

others who loan them things. We write to one woman whose family is

very poor who is paid 45 cents an hour. This is an improvement.

She used to get 10 cents an hour. Shampoo, toothpaste, etc. cost

the same for her as they do for you. This particular prisoner does

artwork in the Navajo (Dine-- Native American) style. It was her

question regarding selling her artwork so that she could make more

money that started the whole conversation about cards and calendars.

Maybe some of these prisoners who make $ from selling cards, would be kind

enough to want to send some $, or donate a percentage of their profits, to some

of the other COLI recipients who don't have family, or whose families are very

poor. This may provide a way for these prisoners to buy their own art supplies,

& then sell their creations. This might also be a way aound our not being able

to give $ directly to inmates.
