I am trying to find some good answers for him." Om Namah Shivaya Dear Umesh: The following words of caution are intended to "protect the Guru." Please accept that I am aware that Amma cannot be protected by a microscopic entity like the devotee GeorgeSon. Nevertheless the Vedic Scriptures insist we should protect the guru. For example Amma is "protected" from devotees bringing her "sweets' on the darshan line. So ... Here goes. To my knowledge, Dannion Brinkley is not a simple hospice worker or head of an organization as you describe. He is a best selling author and a fairly major media entity onto himself. Brinkley goes on Television and Radio fairly frequently. In my view we should not act as Amma's public relations agents between Amma and a public figure. Amma's view on a lightning rod issue like Euthanasia should come from an "official" within Her organization or Amma's own lips. If Amma's position is misquoted we will do Her a dis-service. Umesh posts that he wishes to pass Amma's position on to Mr. Brinkley. Can we in full accuracy do this? If you don't mind, Umesh what is your relationship to Mr. Brinkley? The Holy Mother may have a very nuanced position on Euthanasia. It is a subject that is subtle yet highly controversial. Let us tread cautiously and have M.A. Center interface with Brinkley or his organization. Just one opinion, Brother.. Thank you Umesh. Please post more often. Guest guest
OM! Dear GeorgeSon, Thank you for your response. In no way do I want to get Amma into trouble. I am not involved personally with Dannion Brinkley or his organization (he did found "Compassion in Action") but know from my own sources that this guy is genuine however flamboyant he may be. He has a new, updated website and it is from that website where I read his request: _____________ "As the result of being a hospice volunteer for almost 30 years, I have struggled with this issue myself. The official stand of my non- profit volunteer organization, The Twilight Brigade, is solid: we do not support euthanasia. "However, my personal stand is not so solid; I am not so sure what is right. With the advancements of science and medicine, antibiotics and life support equipment, life can be prolonged passed the state of true quality. In other words, the body can be kept breathing, just merely existing, indefinitely. "The serious nature of this issue is moral. Our own selfish need to hold on to someone we love, as opposed to letting them go on to the next stage of life, must be examined and dealt with by all of us. The spiraling cost of healthcare demands that we ask ourselves, what is the value of a life? How much are we willing to spend to maintain a vegetative state of existence? "I, for one, not only know that there is a life after death, but I have also witnessed the wondrous journey awaiting each of us on the other side. Yet, I still wrestle with my conscience over the righteousness of euthanasia. This issue will not go away. We are being polarized, to one side or the other, by this fierce debate between politicians, lawmakers and religious leaders. We need to open our minds, and explore our own hearts as to what we believe the answer to be. Other countries believe it is not only right, they believe it is humane. In Oregon, the state's euthanasia law is being contested in the Supreme Court. The ramifications of this decision will be far-reaching. Like it or not, it will effect us all. So, write and let me know how you feel about this!" _____________ I myself deal with issues of ethics and morality and have asked people from Swami Muktananda to others on many topics. I have met Amma a number of times and just love her. She even healed my mother of an illness the doctors couldn't heal. One of my own Gurus is now working on a response I can give to Dannion. I'm working on one too. Before, and if, I send anything to Dannion I'm checking around a few places. Ethics is a deep and complicated subject. Often what determines a right or wrong action is our cosciousness, our love (even if we make a wrong dicision). When my mother did pass away I had power of attorney and had to make some hard decisions. I have no doubt about Dannion's good intentions and great work. After being struck my lighting and have his near death experience he changed from being the "biggest jerk he ever met" (his words) to someone trying to be a Mother Teresa (my words). I don't want to get Amma into trouble. Perhaps, if anyone would like, they could past their own opinions though. I'll update you guys. Thank you. Jai Guru!
