Guest guest
And the winner is for Best Documentary is... Born Into Brothels , a disturbing, but ultimately uplifting, story about a handful of Kolkata children of prostitutes whose lives are transformed when they learn to take photographs of their surroundings, was directed by Zana Briski and Ross Kauffman and will open nationwide this month. Briski, an award-winning photojournalist, made her first trip to India in 1995 on a pilgrimage to see Amma, the world-renowned "hugging saint.Sister Ammachi is not my guru, though it was an undeniable connection to her that led me to do this work," Briski told the LA Weekly. Getting Into The Brothel While in India, Briski heard that Amma's foundation had donated a plot of land in Kolkata for the construction of a school for the children of prostitutes. Her interest grew, and in 1998 she began living in the brothel itself, chronicling day-to-day life there and passing out point-and-shoot cameras to the children there. In 2000, she invited Kauffman to join her to shoot the documentary. "The kids were so joyful," Kauffman told India-West in a recent interview (I-W, Jan. 21). "So full of life. That beauty and that joy was what attracted me to the project. I knew right away that this was not a film about 'poor depressed young children in Kolkata.'" Their acceptance speech didn't mention Amma http://www.oscar.com/oscarnight/winners/win_34487.html Has anyone on this list seen this film? I haven't. I didn't even know it had been nominated for an Oscar. But I'm not much of a movie-goer. In fact, the last movie I paid to view at a theater was "Master & Commander" in December 2003. Guest guest
It's brilliantly done, and deeply, deeply affecting...although I also hoped she would mention Amma in her acceptance speech! I recommend it to everyone.
