Dear Gayathry ~ I think to call sinners those innocents who were killed as a result of the earthquate and tsunami is a sad and overly simplistic view. While representatives of many ancient native cultures, as well as Amma, have said that if we humans do not change our ways with regard to Mother Earth, disaster will ensue, I still find it pains my heart to see the innocents as sinners. There are disasters happening all over the Earth ~ the mudslides in California, the quake in Iraq, and others. I do believe that, before we take birth, we decide and know how we will live and die, but we forget once we become absorbed in Maya. And by the way, another definition for Maya, besides "illusion" is "the Great Measurement." In Maya all things are seen as opposites ~ good/bad, saint/sinner, up/down, light/dark, yet it is only through these opposites that we humans are able to make choices and evolve. The Great Measurement is not to cut people down like a sickle but to provide a ruler to measure ourselves and our behaviors, as well as a way to see beyond The Great Measurement. The Goddess who represents this is Durga, who slayed the demons of The Great Ego and the armies of Too Much and Too Little. Please let us have compassion for those who have suffered.
