Swami Satyananda Saraswati, who is Shree Maa's chief and only Swami has said that many translations have been written of ancient sacred Eastern texts over the course of time. He says this is because the ancient knowledge has to be put in a form that the contemporary people can understand. Swami Satyananda calls Shiva the Transformer, which is, I believe a much more positive way for Westerners to view Shiva. He also calls Shiva the Consciousness of Infinite Goodness. So I don't think you need to avoid chanting Shiva mantra. Shiva ki jai! ~ Linda

Shiva ki > jai! ~ Linda Joanna, I am concerned that you are avoiding Shiva because of a perceived "negative quality", i.e. destructive. Rest assured, it is not so. Shiva is sarva-mangala - All-auspicious. If you notice, most texts add "Sri" or "Shri" or "Shree" as a prefix before the names of most gods (Sri Vishnu, Sri Krishna, Sri Lakshmi, Sr Durga, and so on). The Sri added before the name is treat that God with respect and to remind the reader/listener of the divinity of that God. It also makes the usage of the name very auspicious. However, with Shiva, you never use Sri. This is because the very name is dripping with all-auspiciousness. Another thing endearing about Shiva is that he is one of the simplest of Gods, and the easiest to gift boons. The Supreme Kindness of this God is beyond conception. Another name for Shiva is Bhola-Nath or Bhole-Nath (Bhola - Innocent). Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa says that worshipping Shiva with bilva leaves and water and a few flowers is enough to please him; no complex rituals needed to satisfy this simple God. He (who is an ascetic and lives austerely) will easily bless you with enough riches and all other needs. Om Namah Shivaya!
