At the risk of frightening everyone again regarding the catastrophe

Amma is predicting (and trying to avert) in 2005, I decided to post

this message from Lama Zopa Rinpoche. Lama Zopa is a very well

respected Lama of the Gelukpa sect and is one of the founders of the

Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition. I thought

the following message might shed light on previous discussions here

and spur people on to rededicate themselves to sending waves of

loving-kindness throughout the world to mitigate any potential

problems.

With Love,

Dave

Earthquake Advice

Kyabje Zopa Rinpoche

Dear Friends,

Rinpoche has been checking the possibility of a Californian

earthquake for

some years now and thinks a big one can happen in 2005. Rinpoche

says it is

difficult to stop an earthquake but things can be done to minimise

it.

1 Taking 8 Mahayana Precepts

2 Reciting the Ksitigarbha mantra as much as possible (see below) as

well as

hanging a picture of Ksitigarbha in a prominent place in your house.

3 Reciting the reqesting prayer to Padmasambavha

The Kangyur is also being recited two times by the Kopan nuns and

monks.

This is a very large practice and will be sponsored by local dharma

centers.

We are asking for donations to help cover the expenses for this. The

total

cost to have this done is $2756, which includes offering food to the

monks

and nuns during this time.

Rinpoche is advising us how to prevent and lessen the damage, - the

practices need to be done as much as possible and as widely as

possible.

This information is not to cultivate fear, but to help us to prepare.

Rinpoche said last night that we need to let as many people as

possible know

about the practices they can do to help reduce the effects of the

earthquake, even if they aren't Buddhist, because everyone does not

want to

suffer.

Rinpoche also said that it is better to do everything as soon as

possible

and to cultivate as many people as possible to participate because

the

earthquake could be earlier and would be very unfortunate if we

didn't do

these things in time.

Consequently, we have organised a full day of practice at Land of

Medicine

Buddha on Sunday, January 16. This day will include practices to

help

minimise the effect of the earthquake, as well as prayers for World

Peace

and for the victims of Tsunami. Please try to bring as many friends

along as

possible to participate. You are welcome to participate in all, or

part of

the day. Here is the schedule:

6:30am Taking 8 Mahayana Precepts

8am Medicine Buddha Puja

9:30-11:30am Mantra recitation and requesting prayers

11:30am Precept lunch will be served

1:30-3:00am Sutra of Golden Light recitation

4:00-5:30am Tonglen meditation and more mantra recitation

We will also be doing Medicine Buddha puja, as well as mantra

recitation

daily at Vajrapani, at 8:45am, and some of the staff will be taking

precepts

on a regular basis. If you wish to join us please do call, and you

are

welcome to stay for lunch.

Here are the practices mentioned above:

Ksitigarbha mantras:

Long version:

Tayata muni more/muni gha bhe/muni ki li dha ye/muni rogi ba tza

le/muni

hali de/muni gha me shu bha khye/mirla bhag/khe bhaa la la bhag

khye/so ri

kirta tor na kir tsa le/bha tag sha kir te/ku ku la mir le/ ava khya

sa

re/er ha li le bha/muni bhaa thaba soha

Short version:

Om ah khyiti garbha thaleng hung

Padmasambavha requesting prayer:

Precious guru, embodiment of all buddhas of the three times; Great

bliss,

the lord of all accomplishments; Wrathful power, who dispels all

hindrances

and subdues demons; Pray bestow your blessings. Please remove the

outer,

inner and secret obstacles and grant your blessing to accomplish

wishes

spontaneously.

In Tibetan:

Du sum sang gyay guru rinpoche Ngo drup kun dak de wa chen poi zhap

Bar chad

kun sel dud dul drak pos tsal Sol wa deb so jyin gyiy lap tu sol

Chyi nang

sang wai bar chad zhi wa dang Sam pa lhun gyi drup par jyin gyi lob

Again, please note that this information is not to cultivate fear,

but to

help us prepare as much as possible.
