Guest guest
I have been a member here for some time now. Of and on i try to read and understand what is "Amma's" role amongst her followers? Can someone explain to me, why do you pray to her? Is she a Guru, or do you beleive that she is God himself in a form of a human being (similar to what some Sai Baba devotees beleive). I have asked many people unfortunately i dont have much friends who are followers of Amma. I hope someone can clarify for me...in the simplest layman terms. Guest guest
Hey med, Appreciate your innocent question. hmmm .. It's tricky question . It does not matter "to whom" you are praying , Ultimately it reaches to the divine. In the east guru have been given more priority than the traditional dieties ( like shiva , krishna and all ). It does not matter to whom you are praying whther to jesus , krishna , allah or amma , what matters is the INTENSITY AND TOTALITY OF DEVOTION AND SURRENDER !!! . The typical "formal prayers" will not help us to reach there. It may help to get rid of small issues, that's all. According to the eastern thinking(sanadhana dharma), there no difference between the creator and creation ( Amma often repeats it ). All are from the same divinity . Enlightened masters are like fully blossomed flowers where as we are like buds waiting for that to happen . In case of buddhism they convey it directly, enlightenment through meditation. In a way it is a bit dry compared to the path of love and devotion. While following the path of love, inner silence is achieved indirectly and unknowingly without losing the sweet taste of devotion. After all meditation is state that is happening to the mind , not with the mind. We have to switch off our brains for that. no other go !!! When it comes to prayer and surrender amma's teachings are unique in the world and amma herself demonstrates it during the bhajans. The one which I keep close to my heart always is the "Crying to God" part of the following link http://www.amritapuri.org/teachings/sadhana/pray.htm Om Namah shivayah Your little brother Ranjeesh "Truth Cannot be understood It cannot be analysed , It can only be experienced" - Anonymous ----------------------------- Ammachi, "Med" <medusa_metis> wrote: > I have been a member here for some time now. Guest guest
Namah Shivayah, My crystal ball is a little cloudy today, and I can't quite comprehend Amma's state of consciousness (heh, heh), but I know praying to her helps. The irrepressible Manoharan says that Amma is "God's wife." The wife might not have the power directly, but she exerts a powerful influence over the course of affairs. It works for me! Guest guest
Med- Amma is someone who's consciousness has become unified with the Divine Mother who is both an anthropomorphic manifestation of God like Kali or Durga (who may be known through visionary experiences)and the Supreme Consciousness. Supreme Consciousness is a term that's difficult to define definitively as different Hindu philosophical schools define it differently. Ramakrishna though, describing his union with the Divine Mother, states "The buildings with their different parts, the temple, and all vanished from my sight, leaving no trace whatsoever, and in their stead was a limitless, infinite, effulgent ocean of Consciousness or Spirit." From that moment onward Sri Ramakrishna saw all of the manifest universe as this consciousness. Whether Amma is God or not is a different matter since I don't think anyone here is qualified to answer that. That becomes evident after you've read the debates that go on regarding discussions of Amma's alleged omniscience, omnipotence, etc. Peace, Dave --- Med <medusa_metis wrote: > > > I have been a member here for some time now. Guest guest
Namaste, I thought Ranjeesh's response to your questions was simply beautiful, so what I can offer will probably not be of equal value - and it is most certainly only my opinion as I have no idea of what a right answer might be! When I try - and I do mean merely try - to understand Who Amma is, it almost feels like the 'edges' of my mind begin to stretch until I can no longer sense its borders. This may not make much sense to you, but the only way I can explain it is that Mother seems to be represented by my mind as an endless 'space' that is filled with love and divine grace. I experience Amma personally in this same manner: when She hugs me, I know that Her body has borders, but I literally cannot sense where they are despite being pressed against Her! Whenever I try to 'see' the human girl that was born into Amma's body, any sense of familiarity with what I understand to be 'human' disappears; I know that Her heart physically beats as does ours, and that other human physiological processes exist within Amma, but again, if I try to visualize what She's like 'inside,' I sense only deep silence, great peace, and divine grace. Long explanation short: for me, Amma is Divine energy, love, and grace being temporarily made visible by the human form She has assumed. I don't for a minute believe that that form contains all that Mother is and when I pray to Her, it is that, by Her grace, I will one day understand Truth as She knows it to be. Dear Med, It is said that Guru, G-d and the Self are One. However, rather than try to get your mind around that...my inclination from when I first met Amma, was not to try to define Her, because I knew I didn't have the comprehension to do that. Rather, I only wanted to experience Her. A devotee friend of mine put it well when she said, "We don't have the capacity to measure and identify who/what Amma is. We can only try to become like Her." Guest guest
Dear Med, As Dr. Jane Goodall, while presenting Amma with the 2002 Gandhi-King Award for Non-violence said, "She stands here in front of us. God's love in a human body." http://www.ammachi.org/eServices/audio-video/amma-archives.html Amme Sharanam, ota Ammachi, "Med" <medusa_metis> wrote: > > > I have been a member here for some time now. Guest guest
Via email I was explaining to a woman to whom Circle of Love volunteers send letters what amma has been doing regarding the tsunami and the villagers on the island where her ashram is located. The woman responded that THAT was divine love flowing regardless of the form it was in. Shortly thereafter, she sent another email asking for a photograph of Amma. Michael, the man facing life in prison who loves Amma very much, to whom Circle of Love Inside volunteers writes, told about the personal losses he had experienced since being in jail. This was in his first letter to me. He wrote, "Since I've been in here, my father died and my aunt. I found out my mother and grandmother have cancer. … Through all this I still feel good because of Amma, and I know she is God." Divine incarnations are the science fiction aspect of religious tradition. They challenge our admittedly limited understanding of reality. I'm humbled by the simple faith of people like Michael for whom stories of Amma and a picture of Amma settled the matter. Amma is God as far as he is concerned and he's never met her in person. This issue is something for each person to decide. It's a worthwhile exploration. In Amma's love, Aikya Ammachi, "Med" <medusa_metis> wrote: > > > I have been a member here for some time now.
