Amma on vegetarianism?

Om Namah Shivayah~

I am a vegetarian and I know that mother supports a plant based diet,

however I remember reading somewhere that she once in awhile serves fish

during certain occasions. Is this true? If so, does anyone know what these

occasions are? I have not eaten fish in many years, but as of late my body

seems to be craving it and I would like to know what mother's stance on this

is. I am having my own inner battle regarding whether I should or shouldn't

add fish to my diet again, as I feel it is wrong to take the life of any living

being

for my palate. I compare a fish to a cow and say a fish is different and wonder

if I am trying to justify things. I have searched and cannot seem to find

mother's take on this.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

A happy and peaceful New Year to everyone!

I highly doubt if Amma serves fish these days. Amma even expresses

concern for ants and cockroaches :-), so it is very doubtful if she

would consent to serving fish. She was born in a family of fishermen,

so it is possible many years ago that amma may have served fish.

If there is a strong craving for fish, then I would say go for it;

diet restrictions are best achieved when it comes about naturally;

many people (esp. those who chant LS)do not like/cannot eat non-veg.

I think this is what amma says too- sudden changes in diet are always

disastrous, and we have to gradually phase out meat(cannot remember

which book).

Namah Shivayah,

Amma may not serve fish to the masses, but I know for a fact that once when she

was visiting this city, a devotee was sent out to purchase catfish for Amma.

Love

that catfish!

Since Amma comes from a family of fishermen/women, no

doubt fish was a staple of Amma's diet when she was

growing up. Fish is such a staple of the Kerala

economy, that it would be damn near unpatriotic not to

eat fish in that part of India. I remember reading

(possibly in Sw. Amritswarupananda's biography of

Amma) how a bird dropped fish into Amma's lap, during

the time she was alone on the beach in deep samadhi,

going for days without any food.

Namaste,

The title of the specific book eludes me, but I remember reading a passage

ascribed to Amma in which she chided the disciples closest to Her for taking a

"holier than thou" attitude, if you will, towards people who came to Her with

concerns related to the physical body-and for being lightly annoyed with Her for

'wasting' time on their concerns. The upshot of Her response was that She could

not do anyone any good if She could not meet their needs at the 'level' they

needed help and then proceed from there. Could this account for Mother having

been known to serve fish? Just asking!

Does Amma not say to trust yourself? God made your body...

All living things die. But their soul incarnates again. But much suffering is not necessary - so buy organic if you do eat meat. Learn which fish is best.

I think Amma is mostly out to help the poor and hungry, and raise up our consciousness. Whether or not to eat some meat is a detail, imo. The more important question might be, do we give to the poor? Are we living a wholesome life? Working on releasing our addictions? I was talking to a new friend yesterday. She is the 3rd person I have spoken to who was vegetarian for years, but started having health issues, and upon seeing a natural doctor, learned that her body really needed some animal foods. So she listened to her body - and felt better right away. She set aside pride and extended her compassion to herself. Great to find out what our teachers say. But our faith in them should never revert to blind following. She wants us awake, and wise, not fanatical. And all fish will die whether you eat them or not. We are here both learning to be more helpful (our actions), but also learning to lighten up, to be less serious (our minds) :-).
