Guest guest Posted December 30, 2004 Report Share Posted December 30, 2004 The goings-on at the ashram of Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, known to the world as the “hugging mother” and the subject of a television documentary on BBC TV, were also in the news recently. It is said that she hugs people and passes on to them ‘energy’. Reportedly she has hugged and healed some 20 million people all over the world as part of her mission. Last year grand five-day celebrations were organised on her 50th birth anniversary at Kochi which was attended not only by the then PM and DPM but many disciples from other countries. Only a few months back one came across an appeal sent by the PUCL, Kerala requesting people to save the life of a writer and a rationalist leader, Sreeni Pattathanam, against whom the Kerala Government had passed an inhuman order. A book written by him in Malayalam way back in 1985 [Mata Amritanandamayi : Divya Kathakalum Yathar-thyavum (Mata Amritanandamayi: Sacred Stories and Realities) Mass Publications, Kollam, Kerala, revised edn.], had caused the police to swing into action. According to the petition drafted by the PUCL, Kerala the book had questioned the veracity of the mutt’s claims to miracles and had stated that there have been many suspicious deaths in and around her ashram, which need police investigation. Interestingly the painstaking research work contained elaborate references to court records, newspaper reports and quotations from well-known literary figures, including statements from the mutt’s close relatives, as well as an interview with Mata Amritanandamayi herself. Interestingly, when the book was published there was no demand from the mut for prosecuting the author. "B. All the material in the book are speculations, opinions and data all of which are presented without sufficient study. All the opinions collected were ONLY from those people who were opposed to Amma, and the growth of Her Ashram. Moreorless, the book is an archive of rumours, speculation and misinformation. Which court in the human world can explain phenomena that occur around Amma? My only suggestion to my friend is not to waste our time of these trivial issues... pls take ur list of rumours, speculations and misinformation somewhere else. I have no idea why you joined this list, except to discredit Amma in the midst of some of her most ardent devotees. Surely there's a Rationalist you can join. As moderator I am reluctant to reject postings unless they have nothing whatsoever to do with Amma. and I won't boot anyone from this list unless they joined with the specific purpose of spamming. The rest are just plain opportunists looking to pilfer from the people. I come from Amma's village, so I know a lot worse comments and opinions circulate among the local people; which are far removed from any truth nearly as far as I can tell. I too have a questioning mind and am not willing to take things on blind faith - a healthy skepticism is a very good thing and I have to say from time to time, Amma has consistently removed all my doubts. In a few personal instances, she has demonstrated her omniscience and I dont need the second-hand opinion of people whose sole intention is to rake up controversy(eg Sreeni Pattathanam). There is another famous rationalist that goes by the name of Abraham Kovoor; some of his attempts to explain away religions experiences are plainly ridiculous and I wont go into more detail. Truthfully speaking, these rationalists should be called "irrationalists" coz really thats what they are. There is a famous parable I think by Ramakrishna : an old man and a child were walking with a donkey; some people on seeing them commented that how stupid they were because one of them could have ridden the donkey. So know the child rides on the donkey; on seeing this some people commented how cruel the child is because he is making the old man walk. So now the child walks and the old man rides on the donkey; now some people commented how cruel the old man was because he was making a small child walk. So no matter what you do, there will always be critics. So when 10,000 people were saved, people still question why the neighbouring villages were not spared. Now suppose that the neighbouring villages were also saved, the same critics would say, well why did not Amma save all the people in other parts of the world. NOW suppose again that everybody was saved, they would say, now why did Amma let the tsunami happen in the first place LOL. And even during the times of Jesus or Krishna, there were earthquakes and calamities around where they lived; can I then conclude that Jesus and Krishna were fakes? As to why so many people died, I dont have any answer and it is truly sad. Over the last few years there have been a few negative postings about Amma on this list. In the past it really bothered me, but now that I have directly experienced so many miracles through Her grace in my own life, these kinds of postings just open my heart. I think it's natural for people to be wary of large gatherings of people in the name of spirituality. No one can deny that this little planet has seen a lot of abuse in the name of God. One time I asked Amma how to deal with my doubts about Her and the organization in general, and She told me to go ahead and question everything until I had no more doubts. She said that we should never blindly believe something until we have a direct experience. With constant spiritual practice we gain the experiences that open us to grace and help us build faith. So my advice to any in doubt is, go ahead and question. Amma has nothing to hide. Being buffered by Sri Lanka, they witnessed the pre-tsunami water recession, but not the subsequent wave of destruction... it was viewed as divine protection by many." Not affected areas are Rameshwaram (Shiva's temple) and Tiruchendur (Murgan's temple) The sea water went back a kilometer inside the sea and did not flood the temple even though it damaged other places. Ofcourse both these temples are centuries old and the priests and trustees follow a very strict code - simple, unstiched garments, strict vegetarian food - no garlic, onion or beans.
