I also said, to the previously-mentioned mullet-headed

slob, that it was a picture of my mother (not my

girlfriend), to which he said "But she's so dark!"

DOHHHH!!! I had to explain that she's not my

biological mother!

At another place where I used to work, everyone had

pictures on their desks and work areas of their

wife/husband/significant other, their kids, and even

the family dog or cat to boot. Everyone but me that

is, as my experience with relationships makes the Pope

seem like Joe Cool! The closest I could come to a

family photo was a the traditional depiction of Ram,

Sita, Lakxman, and Hanuman.

These posts remind me of my days when I was a freshman at College of

Engineering, Trivandrum about 10 years back. I used to wear a ring

with Amma's picture on it and being a freshman, was frequently at

the receiving end of what is called "ragging" by the senior

students. Invariably, there was almost always a question about whose

picture I have on my ring to which I would answer "It's my mother".

Some of the students literally thought it was my "biological" mother

and would go on commenting how I don't resemble her very much.

Others would tease me because they knew who Amma was and didn't

believe in Her very much. As a 17 year old teenager, it was

initially hard on me, but with Amma's help, I stood my ground and

hung on to my faith.

There is an interesting story in this context about a student who

was a couple of years senior to me. This person, whom I shall call

Mr.A for the purpose of the story, also used to ask me similar

questions with a hint of sarcasm. A couple of years after my

graduation, I was told by someone that Mr.A suffered some serious

health problems following a motor vehicle accident and found some

relief or even cure after visiting a guru (I am not sure if it was

Amma herself or somebody else) and has since becme a devotee. So,

sometimes it takes miracles for people to build faith, for some

others it's just a matter of moments, according to the individual

karma accumulated from past lives.
