If it's just about being poor then every homeless person should claim renunciation. But going deeper, true renunciation is about renouncing the identification with one's ego. Amma has said this...it's also told in the story of Chudala and her king in the Yoga Vashista. After renouncing everything from his kingdom to his loincloth, the king finally learns to renounce his ego instead and then to return to his kingdom to rule dharmically.
