We just received Amma's instructions to satsangs for what activities to have on peace day (read Amma’s message below schedule). Please come to as much of the day as you can. On this day we are observing fasting (as much as we are able) and silence; please note that no meals will be served on this day. Tea, fruit and nuts will be available in the temple. Guide to the Chants: 108 names of Amma: These are names specifically pertaining to Amma and are in Malayalam, the language of Kerala, where Amma is from. A listing of the names and the English translation may be found in the Amma Center 3-ring binders. One person chants each name while the rest of the group chants the response, “Om Amriteshwaryai Namaha”, meaning, “I bow to that Supreme Energy, which is Immortal Bliss” 1,000 Names of the Divine Mother (Sri Lalitha Sahasranama): These names are very ancient and are taken from the Vedas, the scriptures of India. They are in Sanskrit, the sacred language of India. The recitation of the names has a healing effect on the physical, emotional and spiritual bodies of each individual. The 1,000 names are chanted continuously at Amma’s ashram in Amritapuri, India. One person chants each name while the rest of the group chants the response, “Om Parashaktyai Namaha”, meaning, “I bow to She who is the Original Supreme Power”. The names are chanted daily at the Amma Center in Santa Fe. Sri Mahisasurmardini Stotram: This is an ancient chant, set to music, in the Sanskrit language. In this chant, the Divine Mother is called upon to destroy the demons who are taking over the earth. The demons represent the ego. Recently Amma has included this chant in the daily regime at Her ashrams. Om Lokaha Samastaha Sukino Bhavantu: A Sanskrit mantra meaning, “May all the beings in all the worlds be happy.” Om Shanti Shanti Shanti: A Sanskrit mantra meaning, “Om Peace Peace Peace” Amma Center’s revised schedule for Tuesday, September 21: Silence is respectfully requested between archanas Each archana will include 108 names of Amma; 1,000 names of the Divine Mother; & the Sri Mahisasuramardini Stotram: 1st archana: 6 am - 7:15 am 2nd archana: 7:30 am - 8:45 am 3rd archana: 9 am - 10:15 am 4th archana: 10:30 am - 11:45 am 12 noon: 1 minute of silence followed by 18 Lokaha Samastha Sukhino Bhavantus; end with Om Shanti Shanti Shanti 5th archana: 12:30 pm - 1:45 pm 6th archana: 2:00 pm - 3:15 pm 7th archana: 3:30 pm - 4:45 pm 8th archana: 5:00 pm - 6:15 pm Evening Peace Prayers Program: 108 names: 6:30 pm – 6:45 pm Bhajans 6:45 pm - 7:30 pm Sri Mahis. Below is the latest message from Swami Amritaswarupananda: Aum Amriteswaryai Namah Activities of the M.A. Math for International Day of Peace Tuesday, 21 September 2004 On Tuesday, 21 September 2004, all of Amma’s children are encouraged to do as much as possible in their spiritual practices and prayers for world peace. Everyone who practices Integrated Amrita Meditation should offer that day’s practice to world peace. Amma’s ashrams, institutions and satsang groups around the world will hold gatherings to pray together for peace. AT AMRITAPURI Amma will join Her children for meditation. She will also give a short message about world peace. Tuesday is Meditation Day. The 2,000 Amritapuri residents will gather in the temple for silent meditation and japa throughout the day. Pujas/homas will be held for world peace. There will also be a special ceremony involving the peepal tree sapling from Amritavarsham50, which Amma and President Of India Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam watered with sacred waters from 191nations. AT M.A. MATH BRANCH ASHRAMS The daytime program should begin by 11:00 am with the Dhyana Sloka, followed by the Sri Lalita Sahasranamam. (Please begin earlier if it may take longer than one hour to complete the archana.) A period of silence should be observed after the archana until 12 noon. At 12 noon everyone is requested to spend one minute silently praying for world peace. After this, light a small clay oil lamp and chant aloud “Lokah Samasta Sukhino Bhavantu” for the peace and happiness of all beings 18 times. Finish the program with Aum Shanti, Shanti, Shanti. If you are planning for an evening program, it should include the above, as well as usual satsang, bhajans, etc. Pujas/homas will be held for world peace at every Brahmasthanam Temple in India and Mauritius. Swamis, Brahmacharis, Brahmacharinis, Local organizers and Devotees should make sure that the day is observed in all Amritakutumbams, Amrita Yuvadharmadhara Units and Amritakuteeram units across the country. AT M.A. MATH INSTITUTIONS The following are instructions for Amrita Institutions, with the cooperation of the teachers and students: Chant “Lokah Samasta Sukhino Bhavantu” 18 times, followed by one minute silence. This can either be conducted outside, like in an assembly of students and teachers, or if you prefer to do it in the classrooms that is also okay. If you decide to do it in the classrooms, it is enough to begin around 11: 54, as the chanting and silent prayer for World Peace won’t take more than 3 minutes. However, if you decide to do it outside, allow sufficient time for all the students and teachers to gather at the decided spot. 21st of September being a public holiday in Kerala, all Amritavidyalayam Schools and other Institutions, including the Engineering College at Amritapuri and AICT’s may observe this prayer on the 22nd of September. However all institutions outside Kerala must do this on the 21st. In addition, devotees, ashram residents, admirers and like-minded people working at Amma’s institutions, if they wish, can follow the same schedule as is suggested for the branch ashrams. AT AMMA’S INTERNATIONAL CENTRES AND SATSANGS The daytime program should begin by 11:00 am with the Dhyana Sloka, followed by the Sri Lalita Sahasranamam. (Please begin earlier if it may take longer than one hour to complete the archana.) A period of silence should be observed after the archana until 12 noon. At 12 noon everyone is requested to spend one minute silently praying for world peace. After this, light a candle and chant aloud the “Lokah Samasta Sukhino Bhavantu” prayer for the peace and happiness of all beings 18 times. Finish the program with Aum Shanti, Shanti, Shanti. Since International Day of Peace (IDP) is on a Tuesday, and many may be busy working during the daytime program, devotees may want to hold an evening satsang on the 21st. This should include the daytime program as well as bhajans. Important: Encourage as many people as you can to do the one-minute silent prayer irrespective of where they are or what they are doing. _____________ Ammacenter mailing list Ammacenter http://mailman.cybermesa.com/mailman/listinfo/ammacenter vote. - Register online to vote today! Guest guest
How did the UN come to designate Sept. 21 as the international Day of Peace? What's so special about that day? Did they choose 9/21 because of the equinox? So why not Oct. 2 (Gandhi's birthday)? Or even Amma's birthday.
