Guest guest
As this was my 2nd retreat in Rhode Island I always find the question and answer period with Amma very enlightened and at the same time amusing. A question was asked to Amma about Coca Cola and if I am not mistaken in my recollection as to why it should be sold there and/or have anything to do with it. The answer basically that was given was that we have choices and that She has nothing to do with Coca Cola. Like a knife itself which can be used by a surgeon to save a life or by one to kill someone so it is with Coca Cola. Or nuclear energy that can be used for either good or a destructive force so it is with Coca Cola. Or even fire itself that can be used to cook our food and keep us warm in the Winter it has caused the destruction of many acres of land and homes and so it is with Coca Cola. Coca Cola in the CARBONATED form is very unhealthy to one. It breaks down the teeth over a period of time and is totally destructive ...over time... to one's health.......BUT........ Coca Cola SYRUP mixed with water is very beneficial to one's health for it aids in purifying the kidney activity and bladder and the circulation between them. Alexander PS ... I Had been an A.R.E. member for many years which is the Association of Reasearch and Enlightenment. It is the foundation of Edgar Cayce who many consider him to be the father of Holistic Medicine. One of his many readings had talked on Coca Cola why I mention it. Om Amma.

So why not sell Thums Up - the national soda of India - at Amma's programs? It's horrible stuff! Tastes like a cross between Sprite and Mountain Dew. There is also an Indian soda called Limca Cola, which I think was sold as a poor substitute for Coke and Pepsi during the years after Independence until the 1980s, when virtually all foreign products were banned in India. I was really craving Diet Coke while in India. Maybe they have it there now, but they sure didn't back in '95. I had no trouble getting Coke Classic, Pepsi, and of course Thumbs Up, but there wasn't a Diet Coke to be found anywhere in Bharat Mata! I've never heard of anyone being killed by Coca Cola, though a broken Coke bottle (if they still come in glass) can be a deadly weapon! Keval (with a fridge full of Diet Coke!) Guest guest
Just a note about Coke in India ... at the time of Amma's 50th. BD celebration, Amma recommended that we not purchase even major brand soft drinks in India, due to the high level of harmful chemicals (pesticides?) they contained. This may still be the case. Actually, Limca (not Limca Cola)is the lime-lemony drink, not Thums up. You got the names mixed up. > There is also an Indian soda called Limca Cola, which I think was > sold as a poor substitute for Coke and Pepsi during the > years after Independence until the 1980s, when > virtually all foreign products were banned in India. This is Thums up. If there is a national drink in India, it is this one. It's a matter of perspective, but I don't think it's a poor substitute to Coke/Pepsi. Early 80s, when Pepsi came to India, Thums Up was apprehensive about surviving. But survive it did, and magnificiently; Pepsi hardly made a dent into the Thums Up market. Then when Coke came in, the owner of Thums Up caved in to the pressure and sold his drink to Coke. Coke wanted to "phase out" Thums Up using grand advertising and promotions, so that the Thums Up market would be gradually gotten by Coke, and ensure that Pepsi not benefit by Thums Up's exit. It's been years since the takeover happened, and they were never able to phase out Thums Up, as it proved to be just too popular... Coke (India) has now started exporting Thums Up to the Far East too, so there you go! In terms of fizz and sugar content, it lies between Coke and Pepsi. Coke is more fizzy than TU, TU is less sugary than Pepsi.

Guest guest
Regarding Coke, it has no food value, does it? In addition, from the point of view of India, Coke is made by a foreign country. Why should anybody be delighted to import a product that has no value and makes lots of money for a foreign company. The Indian sodas arent' any better for people, but at least they are made there. When I was in Kerala, the most delicious and refreshing drink we had was called lime soda. You got all the ingredients...club soda, a cut lime and sugar syrup and could assemble it yourself. I thought that I would continue to love this madly when I returned to the US but part of the allure is the steamy Kerala temperatures. Guest guest
Namah Shivayah, Actually, the questioner was criticizing Amma for having products from both the Coca Cola Corportation and the Hersheys Chocolate Corporation at the retreat. ("With all due respect, Amma, how could you?" was the exact quote, I believe.) Amma had Swamiji ask the questioner that if her life was threatened by an illness, wouldn't she take a life-saving medicine developed by those corporations. The questioner (whom I never could spot in the crowd) retorted, "No!" Swamiji (or Amma) said, "Well, you say that now, but you really would if the situation arose." Amma pointed out that today's enemies are tomorrow's friends and today's friends are tomorrow's enemies. She said the questioner could not use those products if she chose or could organize heer own protest with 10,000 people. It was also pointed out that MA Center had signed a contract with Bryant College not to sell anything but Coke products. (This is a nationwide trend, I've noticed, that both colleges and hotels have only one company's products available.) The next evening during the Atma Puja, Amma was giving discourse. At the end of the discourse she said, "When one eats a meal, one should remember the hands that prepared it; when one eats chocolate, one should remember the chocolate company that made it," causing hearty laughter among those who had heard the question the day before! Dear Keval, Coke and Pepsi when compared to Thumps Up suck big time. Thumps Up ROCKS.Believe me, I am not exaggerating. All Indians in United States miss TU badly. Given the inferiority complex and contempt towards anything Indian,Thums Up should have phased out long back. But it thrives and prevails. I think Diet Coke is avilable in India, but it has no market. Unlike United States, half of the Indians are not obese nor Indians suffer from Severe Food Addiction. For most Indians Diet Coke tastes disguting, they would take Water as a low cal(if at all needed) suppliment. regards Avinash. Aum Amriteswarayai Namaha! Guest guest
Thank you for sharing this, Jyotsna! Very interesting (and amusing.) I have some memory of being told in the past that the current head of the Hershey Company grew up in an orphanage, and as an adult has been generous in giving to various causes benefitting children. Does anyone know anything about this? Amma's love to you all -- Amala --- "E. Guest guest
Namah Shivaya. Regardidng the Coke, Hershey question, Amma also said that the Hershey for prasad tradition began during the first tour when some devotees brought a bag of Hershey's kisses for prasad, then others brought more. Also, please keep in mind that Amma's organization has a tax exempt status and to maintain that status must stay out of politics. I think Amma restrained Herself in Her answer. Her main point was to urge us to become involved in changing the world. In Amma's grace, premarupa Aum Amriteshvsryai Namah
