Guest guest
The Gayatri Mantra is one of the most sacred and powerful mantra for seekers. This article gives a scientific meaning of the mantra. This mantra should not be chanted anywhere but only during your meditation at the place of meditation. (A) AUM bhoor bhuvah swah: Bhur the earth, bhuvah the planets (solar family), swah the Galaxy. We observe that when an ordinary fan with a speed of 900 RPM (Rotations Per Minute) moves, it makes noise. Then, one can imagine, what great noise would be created when the galaxies move with a speed of 20,000 miles per second. This is what this portion of the mantra explains that the sound produced due to the fast-moving earth, planets and galaxies is AUM. The sound was heard during > meditation by Rishi Vishvamitra, who mentioned it to other colleagues. All of them, then unanimously decided to call this sound AUM the name of God, because this sound is available in all the three periods of time, hence it is sat (permanent). Therefore, it was the first ever revolutionary idea to identify formless God with a specific title (form) called upadhi. Until that time, everybody recognized God as formless and nobody was prepared to accept this new idea. In the Gita also, it is said, "AUM ekaksharam brahma", meaning that the name of the Supreme is AUM, which contains only one syllable (Gita 8.13). This sound AUM heard during samadhi was called by all the seers nada-brahma (a very great noise), but not a noise that is normally beyond a specific amplitude and limits of decibels suited to human hearing. Hence the rishis called this sound Udgith musical sound of the above, i.e., heaven. They also noticed that the infinite mass of galaxies moving with a velocity of 20,000 miles/second was generating a kinetic energy = 0.5 MV2 and this was balancing the total energy consumption of the cosmos. Hence they named it Pranavah, which means the body (vapu) or store house of energy (prana). (B) Tat savitur varenyam: Tat that (God), savitur the sun (star), varenyam worthy of bowing or respect. Once the form of a person along with the name is known to us, we may locate the specific person. Hence the two titles (upadhi) provide the solid ground to identify the formless God, Vishvamitra suggested. He told us that we could know (realize) the unknowable formless God through the known factors, viz., sound AUM and light of suns (stars). A mathematician can solve an equation x2+y2=4; if x=2; then y can be known and so on. An engineer can measure the width of a river even by standing at the river bank just by drawing a triangle. So was the scientific method suggested by Vishvamitra in the mantra in the next portion as under: © Bhargo devasya dheemahi: Bhargo the light, devasya of the deity, dheemahi we should meditate. The rishi instructs us to meditate upon the available form (light of suns) to discover the formless Creator (God). Also he wants us to do japa of the word AUM (this is understood in the Mantra). This is how the sage wants us to proceed, but there is a great problem to realise it, as the human mind is so shaky and restless that without the grace of the Supreme (Brahma) it cannot be controlled. Hence Vishvamitra suggests the way to pray Him as under: (D) Dhiyo yo nah prachodayaat: Dhiyo intellect, yo who, nah we all, prachodayat guide to right direction. O God! Deploy our intellect on the right path. Full scientific interpretation of the Mantra: The earth (bhur), the planets (bhuvah), and the galaxies (swah) are moving at a very great velocity, the sound produced is AUM, (the name of formless God.) That God (tat), who manifests Himself in the form of light of suns (savitur) is worthy of bowing/respect (varenyam). We all, therefore, should meditate (dheemahi) upon the light (bhargo) of that deity (devasya) and also do chanting of AUM. May He (yo) guide in right direction (prachodayat) our (nah) intellect (dhiyo). So we notice that the important points hinted in the mantra is : The total kinetic energy generated by the movement of galaxies acts as umbrella and balances (bodyof energy). This is equal to 0.5MV2 (Mass of galaxies x Velocity2).

Guest guest
namah Shivaya Yes Amma does give the Gayatri mantra to those who ask for it. There is a tradition among the brahmin community in india, where young boys are initiated into the Gayatri- this is traditionally supposed to be the start of the their spiritual life. On the olden days, the young brahmacharies would get initiated in the Gayatri at the age of 7 and then comence their study of the vedas. This ceremony is done today too in what is known as the 'upanayanam' or 'Poonal' Upanayanam literally means 'another eye"- because th spiritual eye is supposed to open with the intitiation .. Amma performed the poonal ceremony for my friend's son, , two weeks ago during Devi Bhava in dallas. I was helping my friend to carry the plates of prasad up on the stage and so was fortunate enough to witness this beautiful ceremony first hand. Most of us had our poonals done when we were young, but my friend's son was fortunate indeed as he got it done by Goddess Gayatri Herself. It was so charming to see Amma initiate the boy in the Gayatri mantra. Traditionally it is the father who teaches it to the son. So in keeping with the tradition, Amma asked the kid to prostrate to his parents as a mark of respect. The parents asked the boy to prostrate to Amma first. He prostrated to Amma, and then Amma once again asked him to prostrate to his parents. He again prostrated to his parents and then Amma called him nearby. Amma then asked him to offer flowers saying 'Om ganapataye namaha", ( Salutations to Lord Ganesha) 9 times. He then repeated Om Ganapataye namaha and offered the flowers at Amma's feet. Each time He offered the flowers to Amma's feet, Amma would take some flowers and shower it on his head. This happened 9 times. It was beautiful, moving , beyond words to sit there and watch the innocent kid offer flowers at Amma's feet saying 'Om Ganapataye namah' and it was equally thrilling to watch Amma's expression as She showered flowers on him each time. Amma then helped him apply vibhuti on himself- She took his hand, dipped it in the vibhuti and helped him apply vibhuti on his arms and shoulders. Ater which , She asked him to form a mudra with his fingers. Then a silk cloth was put over Amma and the boy and under the cover of the cloth, Amma leant over and whispered the Gayatri mantra thrice in the boy's ears. This was undoubtedly the most beautiful poonal ceremony I have ever seen. Om Gayatryai namah Salutations of the Mother of the Vedas. Guest guest
Bala : Thank you immensely for sharing this with us. The practice of Gayatri japa after initiation is called Sandhyavandhanam and is one of the most potent spiritual practices for all, and especially for young children. Bhutashuddhi, pranayama, arghya to Surya and Gayatri japa are all components and will add to the tejas and splendour of the young brahmachari. I can most of the time tell who does Sandhya regularly, just by the feel of the aura around a person. In India, and especially in Tamil Nadu, the brahmin is looked upon as a kind of untouchable these days by misguided politicians, who look upon them as a diseased object who is responsible for most of social ills. In spite of all against them, it is seen that the brahmin community outshines and does very well - the secret of this in my opinion is the practice of Sandhyavandanam. To get initiation in Gayatri from Gayatri Devi Herself (i.e. our Amma) confers untold benefits. Japa of Gayatri gives lifelong protection to the brahmacharee and gives him immense material benefits as well. All children in India regardless of their caste should do the sacred upanayanam and get initated into Gayatri japa. Sri Bhisma says in the Santi parva of Mahabharata, that character alone determines who is a brahmana and birth is immaterial; and by that count, all of Amma's children are by default brahmanas. Householders with young children should seriously consider getting their children initiated into Gayatra by Amma Herself and do the upanayanam ceremony - which is the highest initiation possible. -yogaman Ammachi, balakrishnan Shankar <balakrishnan_sh> wrote: > namah Shivaya > > Yes Amma does give the Gayatri mantra to those who ask for it.
