AMMA SAYS - STORY

The very busy businessman

"There was once a very busy businessman who was experiencing a lot

of tension and worries in his life. None of the methods he used to

try to calm his mind seemed to work. One day he saw a holy man

sitting under a tree and decided to approach him for advice."

"Bowing down humbly before the master he said: 'Oh Revered One, my

mind is filled with tension. I have no peace of mind. Please, tell

me what I can do to find happiness.'"

"The Sage replied, 'Try to do some spiritual practices every morning

and evening.'"

"But where would I find the time for such thing?' exclaimed the

businessman. Saying thus, he brought out a bundle of keys from his

pocket and dangled them in front of the master. 'Just look at how

many keys I have!' he said. 'Each key represents a multitude of

responsibilities I have to attend to! So please suggest an easier

path.'"

"The master replied, 'All right then, I will initiate you into a

mantra. Try to repeat it a few times each day, that's all.'"

"'But I don't have enough free time to do even that! Isn't there an

easier method?'"

"'How far is your bed from your bathroom?' asked the Mahatma.

Puzzled by the strange question, the businessman replied, 'About

fifteen yards.'

"'I'm sure you don't have any other work to do when you are walking

the short distance to your bathroom, so try to repeat the mantra at

least during those few seconds every morning.' And having said this,

the Mahatma gave the man a mantra.

"The next morning when the man woke up, he remembered to chant his

mantra on his way to the bathroom. Then, as he was brushing his

teeth, he thought, 'I can chant the mantra a few time now as well.'

The same thing happened while he was taking a bath, when he was

putting on his clothes, and while driving to work. In fact, many

times during the day, he realized that he was free to chant his

mantra at least a few times. And as the days went by, he managed to

find more and more time to chant his mantra, until it became his

habit to repeat it wherever he was, no matter what he was doing.

This had a great effect on him. By chanting his mantra he became a

changed man. He found the inner peace he needed, and his business

also greatly improved."

"Children, the mantra can be chanted anywhere and at any time. You

should chant it always - even when you're in the bathroom. If you

constantly repeat the mantra, while visualizing the deity that the

mantra represents, you yourselves will gradually take on the

characteristics of that deity."
