Guest guest
Alas, the links to the photos do not work any more. Many people in the US know Ram Dass or his book be here now. My room mate goes to a Church of Religious Science and they use his book on how to meditate. On the evening when he came to Amma's evening program in San Ramon, he was lifted on to the stage. I'm not sure that it shows in the photo but he is confined to a wheelchair having had several strokes. After being lovingly placed on stage, he was garlanded and remained on stage with Amma and the swamis. Someone sitting next to me told that his good friend (name? unknown to me) who is responsible for having brought Ram Dass to India where he discovered Neem Karoli Baba --that friend comes to the San Ramon ashram and always comes when Amma is there. Apparently the friend (American) plays Indian music in the wee hours of Devi Bhava often. Ram Dass did not speak at all and I wondered if he was able to speak because of the strokes.Having sung Rama bhajans with him, the thought of his being mute left me sad. He was one of the American explorers into Indian religious and philosophical thought from the 60's. As idyllic as the 60's may have seemed to some, they were still quite patriarchal and the feminist wave of the 70's did not really change some of the old guys like Ram Dass. Maybe that is due to Euro-American and Indian confusion about emotions, sexuality and spirituality. Can we be spiritual and emotional? Can we be spiritual and sexual? Then, to complicate matters, celibacy is held up as an ideal. If people marry, they may think that they can never acheive the heights. For those who have a dedicated celibate lifestyle, there can be tremendous tension around emotions. These issues are a mine field for many. Anyway, since Ram Dass came out of that old style, male chauvinist 60's model, I thought that it was a pretty big deal that he came to see Amma. After all, his friend had been coming for years and years. You can read all about his life in his book, "It's Here Now; Are You?" It came out in 1997, I believe. I don't believe he sings much at Devi Bhava anymore. I didn't see him this year, but that doesn't mean he wasn't there when I wasn't. He stands out because he's very tall and has a dreadlocked topknot--and dresses Indian style. I won't say any more. Guest guest
Dear Aikya, The links will work if you copy/paste the entire address into the address bar instead of just clicking. I saw the photo myself only yesterday. Ram Dass had one stroke, I believe, not several. He is confined to a wheelchair but he can speak. He takes his time and his voice sounds a bit different, but yes, he can speak. My husband and I went to see Ram Dass and Krishna Das together last year in Ohio. It was a fantastic day. Ram Dass still has "it", whatever "it" is (I personally believe that his "it" is faith and grace). Have you seen Ram Dass' movie, entitled "Fierce Grace"? If not, I highly recommend renting a copy. It is an amazing movie that drove me to tears. I was so happy to see Ram Dass with our Amma!
